More Savage ?'s

I was reading in the guns of the week #36 about the savage and he said he wasn't sure if the action trueing helped any. As an Army guy with 3 rugrats my toy budget is limited. I know Pac-Nor will true your action and barrel it if you want them to, but is extra cost necessary, and is their process beneficial? I would probably buy one of Richard Franklin's low cost stocks and try to inlet it myself, and would prefer the accu-trigger but could deal with a replacement if there is one that won't give me nightmares. I like the whole low cost savage option but I really do mean low cost. Also I saw on some other posts; members recommending to just get any old savage action long- short doesn't matter. Is this true in the race for accuracy. I have an AR that prints in the 1/4 inch range pretty regular when I drive it right, so I kinda am spoiled/expectant of that kinda performance.
Thanx in advance for anyones help.

If you can stand the wait, I'd have Fred Moreo of SSS, who specializes in Savage actions, due the work on your action. He charges about a quarter of what Pac-Nor does, and as mentioned, that's what he does... work on *Savage* actions.

The reason the action trueing doesn't always make a marked difference in accuracy is sometimes things come out OK out of the factory, and with the floating bolt-head on the Savage, some things that get done during an conventional action trueing, fixing the bolt lugs) may not have as noticeable of an effect. More of what Fred does involves re-working the cam and lift angles of the bolt, so that they aren't working against each other,as I understand it) as they often come from the factory, resulting in a stiff bolt lift.

YMMV,

Many Savages shoot well right out of the box, and the floating bolt head helps center the cartridge in the chamber. Get a long action,i.e. model 112) and you can load short cartridges of the .243 class and easily load for bullet to kiss the lands. I just purchased my first Savage Accuatrigger model, and I was unable to adjust it below 1.25 lbs. Not real happy with that. Shoot it for a while before you decide whether having the action trued is worth the money. Fred Moreo at SSS is a good gunsmith, but there are better. Ya gets what ya pays for.

I had the action work on the Savage done 3 years ago. Since then, Fred Moreo has devised ways to reduce the bolt lift. That would probably be worth the expense. But I'd look for an Accutrigger model if you can live with the little insert in the trigger shoe. I found the SSS trigger required lots of filing on the trigger guard and tweaking to work right and it's not inexpensive.

Thanx Mod,
I was wondering, does the work fred performs help accuracy or just make the bolt a little more user friendly to operate? I am more concerned with making critters go away from as far away as I can see them. Also, is it possible to tear the bolt down and polish things a little to smooth it up myself or not?

And.. while I am buggin ya to death, is the Pac-Nor barrel a drop in for the Savage or does it need to be finish chambered? And... what is your take on the short vs. long action. I am willing to hand feed a short action in 6mmAI if it meant better accuracy. And....do you think a 6BR's inherent accuracy makes it a better choice than the 6mmAI's explosiveness?

Thanx for letting me be a PITA.

Try it first then if it doesnt perform as expected, send the action off to be tweeked.
A long action has more bedding area if your hanging a big fat barrel on it, but I have big barrels on Rem short actions with no problems.I doubt there is any real accuracy advantage to either.

My buddy had a 6AI that was incredible on dogs up to 600 yards but only lasted 1200 rounds. A 6BR has alot better barrel life and is inherently more accurate.

With its "pre-fit" option, PacNor can deliver a barrel for you that will simply screw-on to your gun. Headspace using a piece of fired brass or go-gauge. My gun was chambered and the bbl was installed by PacNor--mainly because we were trying out a custom countour and I wanted to make sure everything fit up right on their end. That said, if you have a good smith near you, I'd pay the extra money to have your smith do the chambering, just because that is so critical and you'll get more personalized service. PacNor does have a no-turn reamer for the 6BR. I believe it has about .110" Freebore--too much for the Berger 95 VLDs if you want to reach the lands.

Yeah I definitely will go with an outside smith for the chambering then. What freebore would you recommend if I wanted to shoot 107's but also try to touch the lands with the 75 grain V-max?
Thanx

Oldschool: I had a 1.055 smss PacNor barrel chambered in 6BR earlier this year by PacNor. Had a reamer made for me by PTG with a free bore of .085. I shoot 75 & 87 gr V-Max and 105gr A-Max. This seems to work well for me. the 105's are seated .015 into the lands. Was shooting ground squirrels on Saturday at 450 yds, boy are those 105's deadly. Barrel installation is very easy, but you will need a barrel wrench and a vise to do this. My original action was a short action that was converted to a single shot by Kevin Rayhill. He trued the action and restocked it in one of his long range varmint stocks. In order to float the barrel properly I had to open up the barrel channel a bit, not a big deal. About a month ago I received my back ordered tactical bolt handle from SSS, its very nice and works well with the stock. I like the longer bolt handles because they allow easier bolt lift and are more comfortable with a bit larger stock. I would recommend the Ken Farrel scope rail for a scope mount. this gives the action a little bit more rigidity and is a very good scope mount. My trigger is the SSS trigger on a pre-accutrigger action, it works well but not like my 2 oz Jewel, of course thats another story and a lot more $$$.

Good luck and have fun.
