More info on David Tubb's new 6mm DTAC 115

From David Tubb's Facebook page today.

Update: New bullets will be available the first week of July.

Here is my logic behind the new DTAC 115 REBATED BOATTAIL

Having shot 6mm fast twist barrels with a good degree of success this bullet short history should be an interesting read.
In the 1980’s we shot 107 weight range 6mm bullets for Silhouette and High Power competitions. Lower recoil and good wind drift were paramount in coming to the 6mm bullet diameter.

After I developed the 6XC case around 2003 I approached Sierra about making me a 6mm bullet in the 115 grain range. They ran prototypes in 112, 115, and 120 grain configurations. I thoroughly tested these and decided on the 115 gr. In 2004 I used these at Camp Perry and the result was a Long Range National Championship aggregate with a perfect score was the result 1450x101. Enough Said……..

In 2007 Sierra had just introduced their plastic tipped bullets. I had them run a test batch of plastic tipped 117 gr weights. These didn’t pass my criteria.

We the ran another test batch of 111 gr plastic tip 6mm and they looked great in the Sierra tunnel tests. However when shot them over an Oehler 43 at 1000 yards the results indicated the plastic tips were deformed or nonexistent at the target. These didn’t pass my criteria.

FYI -- the plastic tip deformation testing information precedes the Hornady Plastic tips “Are Bad” advertising campaign by more than 7 years -- LOL.

When using a 308 early in my High Power rifle career we shot 190 gr Sierras at the 600 yard stage. When 600 yard accuracy began to fall off a switch to a 185 gr Lapua rebated boat tail brought the accuracy back. I remember shooting some very high X count scores with 185 Lapuas.

The reason the Lapua worked in a worn barrel is because the rebated boattail allows the bullet to opturate to fit the worn throat and prevent less gas leakage around the bullet when fired.
I had a bullet maker friend reform some 6mm 115’s with a rebated boattail (RBT) in 2015 and had excellent results .
So it was a natural move to redesign the current DTAC 115 6mm with a RBT and a 7 degree boattail.

The new DTAC 115 RBT testing is complete and can claim the following;
G1 1000 yard BC of .620.
Stabilized out of true 8 twist or faster barrel at velocities approaching 3000 fps at Sea Level.
Extended 6mm barrel life resulting from the RBT design

Thanks for the update .
I am a big fan of the 6XC.
I also like the history of how it came to be.
I like the 107's sierra I am also quite fond of the Berger 105,115
I have never had any 115 DTAC's
I am looking forward to maybe getting some of the 115NG's
Will there be a long range hunting version ? That's a lol.....But hey maybe, a with a extreme Tip.

This should be a hell of a bullet. If it works out well it should put the small and mid size 6mm cases right up there with all the 6.5's and in the lower end of 7mm performance at 1K and in the bigger cases like the CM it looks like it might have a slight advantage over the 284's. Being a 6mm guy I'm really looking forward to trying some!

I currently run 115dtacs in a .243 win with a 1-7.75 Benchmark and with RL-26, I can hit 3201fps, bolt is slightly stiff, I backed off .5grain and run a true 3110fps. This was a 10 shot average. Accuracy is stellar. 0-500yds is just a chip shot. No use to own a 25-06 when RL-26 can push these bullets like that. It also shoots the 115 Berger VLDS little faster and accuracy is great too.

Curious if anybody has used a 6mm Remington/AI with a 7.5 or 7.75 twist barrel and RL-26. THIS may be the cats meow with dtacs.

Note : 3000 fps ? love this point out of a 6XC ???
Ran 115 D-Tacks in a 6 Rem. case 1000 rifle. 32" Krieger 1-7.5 at 3025fps with H4831 SC .
Wonderful Round at 1000 yards ................... 2 Barrels went south at 1700 + rounds.
Small Hole Big Burn = short Barrel life.
Still a Great Bullet and Great Round.

I have been playing with a 115 Berger HVLD out of a 26" full 1-7 twist Brux. 6XC with RL26
3,150 FPS slight pressure...3,100 FPS good. Really shoots from 2,950 to 3,100 Good. Still tinkering
43.5grs seems to be my go to load..I use a 4" drop tube funnel to fill them. powder to top of shoulder or bottom of neck how ever you want to look at it..I have loaded all the way to 45.0 grs using a drop tube and slow fill..Not compressing the powder..But 43.5 just use the drop funnel and dump. I cant tell you how fast I can push a 105..If the 115NG DTAC is easy to push I think 3,100 from the XC with 26 will be easy...I also wonder how a 28" 30" barrel would preform with the 26 also..

I have new Krieger 28" 6mm Competition Match barrel coming. I will shoot the DTAC's in this one just like the others I've owned. H1000 will be my powder of choice as usual (already have it).

Some more info off of David Tubb's Facebook page

"
"David Tubb Here are couple of reasons that the RBT design was selected. These are not based on the RBT being a ballisticaly superior to a conventional boattail design. If the new DTAC 115 RBT was produced in a conventional boattail shape the G1 (1000yd) BC numbers would be very close.

The Rebated Boattail design was selected because;

1. Easier to precisely hold tolerances when manufacturing the 7 degree boattail angle– most conventional boattails have 9 degree angles (or greater).

2. RBT more efficiently opturates to the bore of the rifle barrel when fired. (Mimics a flat base bullet design). This will allow the RBT design to extend your accurate barrel life by reducing gas leakage around the bullet when fired in a worn 6mm throat."

I don't want to derail this thread but since we are Talking MR Tubbs,The 6XC, 6mm 115's I thought I would share this.
I went to the range today to recheck my Zero. 200 Yards Zero. Fire a few threw the 6XC..
Some doubt the XC Speed capability's and some doubt it's accuracy. Then some doubt a 1-7 twist's accuracy. Then there is RL26 ?
Ah it seems RL26 shoots decent..Now I don't compete with it. Just my Hunting/ Fun at the range rifle..#4 Brux Sporter barrel 26" Long.....My Load of RL26 43.5 grs has shot many or I would say most always is a 3 shot mid .300's at 200 Yards..Ah 2.5" 500 Yards . 3" to 4" at 700 ....I can only wonder about the new 115NG DTAC .620 BC at 3,100 FPSIMG_0647.jpg IMG_0648.jpg
I think we can call that 700 yards group 2 1/4" 3 shot group ?
That's not too bad right ?
It sucks, vertical, but that head wind , I hate that head wind at that range, you never know what it will do to ya shoot it.

Cant wait to get my d tacs, just got my 6 slr bedded last night. Hoping i can get comparable velocity to what you guys are talking about. I am running a 7.5 twist rock creek finished at 26" have seen that the 4831sc is kind of the go to powder for this combination. Will try a couple others, but hoping i can get a decent velocity with a good group

I pre ordered some today. They should get here about the same time I get my new 6x47L Improved finished up. Hope they shoot good!

I'm with you, swd!
Heck, I still got a mess of 'old' DTACs to burn first, hence opting for a 7.5 over an 8 on the new 6x47L...
"Improved", huh? NICE!!!

6x47L with the shoulder blown forward with a Dasher neck and shoulder. It should push DTAC's around 3100 and 107's 3200-3300. Going on a Nesika J and have a 31" 7.5 twist 5R Bartlein waiting patiently for the reamer which should be here any day. I'm hoping to have it together for some July F Class. I've got 1 box of old DTAC's, about 1600 107's and 1000 new DTAC's coming so I should be in business a while.

7.5 Krieger, long & straight here on a long XC. Have an identical X Cal 7 tw coming. Not sure if the 7.5 will tote the note - ya just never know.

If you want speed try RL26. 7828 and H1000 are also good. The 1000 will help with barrel life. I shot mostly H4831 in mine and it lasted about 1900.

Ive shot some of the best groups of my life with my 6xc and 105 bergers, ive had DTACS in the back of my head though ive wanted to try. Reading this makes me want to shoot some even more..
