Montana Rifle Model 1999????

Anyone out there have one of these rifles or have any experience with them???? I think it is a Winchester pre 64 Model 70 copy with some upgrades. Thanks in advance for any info.

I just bought one that was purchased direct from Montana Rifle Company about 18 months ago, when it was purchased is key because MRC had some early problems. It is a stainless short action I bought it for building a deer gun, they call it a short action but it is long for a SA and has an internal magazine length of 3.125". I am looking at chambering it in a 284 Win, I will check to make sure 3.125" is long enough but I don't think it will be a problem.

On to the action: Overall nice quality, the trigger is adjustable and is more than adequate for a hunting gun. If you want a highly polished action you are going to have to polish the action as it has a heavy matte finish. I stripped the action and bolt completely and I am running while watching the TV with Flitz in the action as a means of honing the raceways so the action will operate smoother and this is working well.

WW Brown, thanks for the post. All info is greatly appreciated. BigBlueandGoldie, not sure if you were asking me, but I haven't choose yet...just now looking into it. I am looking into it because it is an upgraded copy of the pre-64, it is stainless, unlike anything stainless Kimber makes it has a floorplate and it is offered in 280 Ackley Improved. What "other available actions" are you referring to??? Actually, it doesn't appear this one is available at this time.

I assumed you were looking at one of their actions. I've seen a few pop up recently on various boards.

I have had one for quite a few years now in 358win. The finish is a bit rough on the underside and the bolt can bind if you put too much upward pressure while chamberring a round. One of the upgrades for a 70 would be the bolt release as well. I like the 1999 release much better. It's a good action for a hunting gun and the simplicity of a model70 trigger has never let me down.

I'm curious as to why you chose this action vs the other available actions on the market? I assume controlled round feed?

I like the controlled round feed and the three position safety for a hunting gun. Not real sure why I go for the controlled round feed when I have single loaded my rifle while deer hunting for the last 15 years, but gun buying decisions are made based on wants more than needs most of the time.

Yes I know I could modify many factory actions to a 3 position safety and a number of them already do.

My hunting guns have all been Mauser 96's or 98's for the last 20 years so I am used to putting the single load into the magazine, instead of grinding the extractor to cam over on the case rim, not a deal breaker.

I have only had one in the shop. It did not measure out well. Definately would need truing. Would be ok for a hunting rifle where top accuracy is not the main goal.
