Winter is finally giving up in Southwest Montana and the gophers are showing themselves after being underground since last August. I was on a ranch at the south end of the Tobacco Root Range at about 6000 feet. Last year this time this calving pasture still had about a foot of snow on it so it’s a bunch easier this year with the lower snowpack. I worked on some close ones with my Anschutz 1700 Classic then broke out the .17 Mach IV when the wind came up. I get about 6 to 8 weeks of gophers and prairie dogs before the fishing gets good and then it’s game on with the fish until late September.
