Moly...?

After not shooting for 6+ years I am back to it. Have a small supply of Moly V max 50g .224's
and my prior test targets w these in a 22-250 are nice. I'm going to load 'em...as they are here- but -

I see there are no longer Moly bullets available for sale. Any info?

I did not chrono - loaded & shot 36g Varget, BR-2, Win/Frontier brass 50g moly. small groups.
out of style? or?

If you already have a pet load that included Molly bullets send me a bunch and I'll Molly them for you. Or tell me what you want and I can pick them up and send them to you to save some Freight

Short answer? Out of vogue.

Unrelated and totally unscientific story? I bought a used low horse power 22 caliber centerfire barrel from a guy down south. Had been to the prairie dog fields. Used moly bullets. I was never happy with the accuracy. I finally scoped it. it had pits in it so long and big sections of rifling was gone. Worse than my 1884 trapdoor!!!

My theory? Moly attracted the salty water in the humid air and that barrel literally rusted like a barnacle covered cannon on the bottom of the sea. No other reason for such a mess the entire length of that barrel only INSIDE. BTW, the throat was great...except for a pit.

moly does one thing and one thing only
it allows one to shoot the same, longer before accuracy drops off, and cleaning is required.
specific cleaning is required for a moly bbl.
it may lead to longer bbl life.
this is the results of testing by lapua/norma ( do not remeber which one )
all else is wives tales with no documentation nor facts.
wet moly coating has made the process much cleaner..do a search
other coating have passed it by.
i use hbn...still moly some bullets tho

In this modern time of "magical lubricants", it's hard to believe that there isn't some perfect lube/coating, which offers everything that we need for the bullet's trip through our barrel.--- and corrosion resistance when we're done shooting.

In my lifetime, I've seen internal combustion engines improved in lifespan from 100,000 miles to 300,000 miles. I assume one of the reasons for this it enhanced technology regarding lubricity of gliding surfaces.

If molly isn't gonna provide our "magic bullet", I wonder if there's something else. Maybe goose grease.:p jd

Your theory may be right. Moly is said to be hygroscopic (moisture attracting - check countless web posts on this subject) and added to the salt air you describe could be a real issue. I have no bias either way (moly vs. plain) except that I never could get them to shoot in my rifles. I do have a friend that uses them with some success, so it really is a matter of choice.

actually it is improved mechanical parts...closer tolerances everywhere, essentially no "break in".
today's engines have electronics to control almost everything.
no knock no ping, perfect fuel mixtures, it is the quality of the assembly, not some magic lubricant.

I used Moly and did my own Bullets for years . I shoot mostly Palma . That is .308 for those that may not know .
All the New 30cal. 155 gr . Bullet have much less Bearing Sufface .
In testing loads I saw No difference .

I do still believe one benefit to the Moly is Bullets will not take a set in the case neck , in rounds that set for longer time .

My loading room is much cleaner !

I have been wanting to try the secret kitchen utensil coating used by Clark Griswald on his snow disk in Christmas Vacation, but I've had trouble locating a reliable supplier.

Had a crew member slip me a small amount. Makes my old .30/30 kick out 170 grain bullets at 4,200 fps....but man are those bullets hard to hang on to when loading...o_O

4200 ? How big is the Hammer you use to open the bolt ? Or is it 5 feet of pipe ?

Had to mix a little LocTite with it so the necks could grip the bullets. No idea of accuracy. Bullets seem to come apart at about 50 yards. Extraction is easy...lever opens with each shot. Cases haven't been found yet.

out of vogue, got it. well, I have plenty of copper cleaner. montana exterme & sweets seem to do it. guessing you rebarrelled?

If you stop using Moly remember to re work up your load!!! The only gun I still use Moly on is my hunting 300 WBY. I had been on 82 G of RL 25 for ever but brass life was only about 4 or 5 firings so i dropped it down to 81....perfect. A few years ago I decided to try naked bullets, so I dropped the charge another grain to 80, cleaned the gun really well and went out to test. 1st shot stuck the bolt enough that I had to use a rubber mallet to open. Figured it was a one-off fluke, so I did it again!!!! SAME.

I ended up dropping to 75 grains to get the same velocity and PSI as the 81 grain moly load. I even put a big skull and crossbones in my load book to remind me!!

Now , I don't think that this is typical, but it is food for thought...it can happen!!

thanks. ah the old whack the bolt. been there 1x or 2x I will heed the warning, I'm using small cartridges 81 to 75 is quite a bit !
Seems to validate moly make bore smoother?

Well, yes, I finally sent that barrel off and gasp...bought a 223. i have become pedestrian, commonplace, milktoast, bland, boring. But I have lands and grooves....
