Moly coated bullets carrode barrels

I have been shooting moly on & off for at least 10 yrs in short
range BR & have had good success & no problems at all. Shooting
moly bullets require a different cleaning technique & also a
different loading technique.

I put all my guns and reloading equipment into storage in 1997 after a $400,000.00 divorce,worth every penny I might add). When I started buying/reloading again in 2004 Moly was new to me and there were clearly two camps which were greatly separated. I can make no claims one way or the other. I shoot both from time to time and have had no bad experiences but mainly shoot naked bullets. I shot some Moly coated Bergers today and they coincidentally were the most accurate rounds I've shot,80gr Varmint FB, Match Moly)I didn't even weigh the powder or neck turn the brass,all my Lapua 6mmBR has a factory dough nut)I just set up, threw a couple loads of 2230C at 33.5grs .005 into the lands 2.756 base to ogive with a Stoney Point comparator and ran with the powder measure.
The point emerges: I have never detected copper fouling at any level in my Krieger barrel and I check with Shooters Choice after every session never no blue unlike my factory .243 Rem 700. I did shoot Hornady 75s with the same powder and at the same time without cleaning and accuracy did fall off a bit but only about .250 inch at 200yds after 66 rounds of mixed.
Remember the point? It took several hours to get the copper out of the barrel.
So, different jackets with copper incompatibility or Moly?

It gets to be something like Ford vs Chevy, Republican vs Democrat.

What you believe affects what you see.

There are more important things that moly vs non Moly:
1) Do you believe moly will help?
2) How well lapped is the bore?
3) Do you prefer fighting Copper or fighting Moly?
4) Do you have the discipline to follow a Moly regime?


These questions are more important than the subtle advantages and disadvantages of moly vs non moly, so discussion is difficult.

I am a moly believer, and I prefer to get an unfired, factory lapped barrel, and burnish it with Moly Bore Creame before first firing. That way I don't get any Copper under the Moly.

Non believers do just as well as me with their non moly bullets.

Dick, could you elaborate more on your loading and cleaning techinique. I shoot moly and want to learn more. I break in naked and then use Montana extreme to clean througholy. I use moly prep to condition the bore and then switch over to moly.

Cleaning. I use a nylon brush and dry patches. I do go back to bare metal ever 200 rounds or so.

Dick, I am curious as to what you have found. I have been shooting moly for only 3 years...so please post or pm me!
