Molly Coated Ammo Question

Greetings
I am a newbie to this forum so please be kind..I have a Sav model 12 BR. I purchased 80 rounds of Lapua 6mm BR Silver Jacket Scenar. I have about 100 rounds through the factory barrel. Can I shoot these molly coated rounds without any prep to the barrel? Can I switch back to HPBT copper w/o any problems? My groups at 100 yards are inside a 1" circle and I was hoping these rounds could improve on my groupings. Thanks

There`s not a great deal of range reports on web boards in regards to swithching back and forth from naked to moly, etc. Should you insist in trying moly coated bullets, at least de-copper your barrel with Butch`s Bore Shine or one of the foaming bore cleaners to insure you have all the copper fouling removed from your barrel. At that point, I strongly suggest you "prep" your bore with with moly paste and patch out the excess, then try the moly coated bullets.

Should you decide to return to the uncoated bullets, you`ll have diffilculty removing the moly that`s left behind. You can`t get all of it out...no matter that there are products that tout that capability.

While I can`t comment on how effective swithching back to naked bullets is, I can say with some certainty that having a Hawkeye borescope to peer in my bores prior to and long after using moly coated bullets that there are benifits to doing so.

More rounds thru the barrel before cleaning is necessary comes to mind first. Secondly, I have yet to experience any degredation in accuracy.

YMMV... ;)

what would be the issue with a little molly left in the bore? wouldn't it in filling in the nano size imperfections in the bore or would there be an uneven drag on a naked round?

As long as all the copper fouling was removed prior to an attempt with moly, none that I can see. Your correct that there will be residual moly left in the bore as we can`t remove all of it. Can`t imagine that what is left behind could have any measurable effect.

I`ve yet to abandon moly in a rifle, once the decision was made to switch in the first place.

Maybe someone here has done so and could provide some empirical evidence?
