Modifying Redfield/Leupold windage type rings/bases

i have probably 8 sets of the redfield/leupold windage type rings/bases laying in the parts box i dont use as i converted everything to the pic rail style scope mounts. i bet alot of people have some of the redfield style they dont use. im trying to think of a way to make use of them. thought of converting the rings to levels. and i thought of welding the rings to the bases except that would block access to the base screws. anybody have any ideas?

ps wasnt sure weather to put this in scope/optics or here

They work fine for hunting rifles and are lower profile plus lighter weight. Put em up, someday youll go back to them or a buddy will need them

yeah i have a few rifles i think i will use them on that will never be tack drivers anyway. thanks

The old style windage adjustable rings are a hold over from before WWII when the few scopes on the market had elevation adjustments only. The rear ring cannot take very much of the recoil impulse and thus most of it goes to the front ring making them a poor choice for a heavy caliber rifle. Also, adjusting the rear ring tends to bend the scope tube. They are useful when the scope base holes are misaligned with the bore. For modern rifles, there are far better choices today.

Theyre not really made for cranking a scope into alignment but i guess there should be warnings there as with anything these days

when aligning them i never moved the rear windage screws with a scope in the rings. i took the scope out turned the windage screws the way i wanted and stuck a lapping bar in both rings to align them. mabie turn the dovetail ring with a crescent wrench. then put the scope back in. time consuming but i didnt want to put that force on the scope tube

i agree with this. i actually thought about seeing if the dual dovetail bases were available for what i need so i could just use 1 ring from 2 sets and get some use out of them.
