Model 70 Action......???

I have a post 64 Winchester short action rifle in 308 that I am considering rebarreling to 243,varmit weight)....If I use a premium barrel such as douglas or Shilen, will I get better accuracy than a factory Remington or Savage varmit rifle...??...I know that model 70s aren't usually the choice for custom rifles anymore....thanks for any advice

I think you should do it. I would suggest a no turn 6mmBR instead of the 243.

I second the 6BR recommendation. You'll have a ball with the Model 70, they are perfectly good actions for just about any use. Our club has a bunch on the firing line at every match and they are at no disadvantage. The Model 70 is considerably more rigid that a Remington 700 repeater, the Jewell trigger is excellent, but the factory trigger can be made very good also. If you want a repeater, the .243 or the 6XC are both good choices.

Back to your original question, a good custom barrel, properly installed, will give you significantly better accuracy than a factory barrel. Get a 1:8" twist and you can shoot 105/107 grain bullets in whichever cartridge you choose. Have fun!
