Model 70 243 coyote light

I'll be picking one of these up in a month or two. My cousin is selling it to me for a price I can't refuse. No real use for it, but I have a couple ideas anyway...I already have 3 LR rifles that weigh 16-17#. A 223, 6 Creed, 7-300 Win mag. So my thought was to make this a lighter alternative to my 6 creed for a coyote calling rig. Probably shoot 70g NBTs over H4350 until the barrel is toast, which shouldn't take too long. Then comes the fun part of deciding what route to go after that? A lot of my hunting and shooting is steel at longer distances, out to really however far you can see out here, which is miles. But typically I like to play out to 1K. I have an idea as to what I'd like to rebarrel too, but I feel like almost anything I do, is going to have some overlap between the 223 and 6 creed. I shoot 75 eldms at 3000 and 108 eldms at 3025. Let's hear some of your guys thoughts and opinions on what to rebarrel to!

I have a couple parameters I need met here. Must use either N540, H4350, or H4831sc as I have an extra 8# jug of each on the shelf. With a 24" barrel, velocities need to be 2850-2900fps with the heavier for cal bullets. Ease of tuning and loading would also be nice. Must also feed from the factory model 70 mag at 2.8" Trying to figure out which cartridge either in 6mm or 25 since it will just be a LR steel and coyote rifle out to 1K, but keeping the weight down to around 9.5-10# at most with scope. So with this criteria, what do you guys think? What are my options? I have a couple few in mind...

6GT…. You should get those velocities, a longer barrel life than a .243, ability to use heavier projectiles, up to 115 if you use a 7:1 or 7.5:1 twist or just keep an 8:1 barrel for up to 110’s.
It will reach out and tap them Yotes at 1K distances on worries!

The rifle would never be used for deer. My 7-300 is my antelope/deer/elk/bear rifle.

What's the best 6mm bullet in a 10 twist for longer range? Not sure it'd be up to the task out to 1K.

I was thinking 6 GT, 6x47L, 25 GT, 25x47L, 25 Creed, or maybe even 6.5x47L? Not sure the GTs will give the speeds I want with the 24" tubes. I can go 26" if need be. Probably borderline with the x47s also.

Would probably shoot the 105-108s in the 6mms, 133-135s in the 25s, and 140s in the 6.5.

If planning on ANY chambering using a SRP, have the bolt face bushed. The firing pin tip is well over .080” (maybe .085”+) and you will blank primers on even light loads and small rifle primers. I’ve done that to several of them and no issues with the tip turned down to .070” and the hole bushed appropriately. I do like the action and have built many good accurate rifles out of them including x47 Lapua variants, WSM’s, and 284 based calibers.

A very good option for your standard bolt face is a 284 based cartridge with the factory WSM mag box/follower. Just need to reshape/shorten the bolt stop (or replace) and you have 3.050” OAL available in the magazine. I’ve done a 25-284 and a straight 284 win in handy hunting rifles and they shot extremely well.

I have one of these Model 70 Coyote Light in 22-250. They seem to be a pretty decent rifle I think they call them a controlled round push feed action because they aren't a true CRF nor are they a PF but rather a combination of both. Interesting info about the firing pin I'll have to keep that in mind and pass it off to the smith if I ever decide what to do with it. I can't decide if I should sell it or rebarrel it to something else.

The trigger in mine sucked so I put a Timney in it and also added a single stack detachable mag setup to it. If I recall it allows me a COAL of 2.965. Mine never gets shot and I can't decide if I want to make it a 6 or 6.5 something or other. I'd make it a 25CM and not even think twice about it but I already have a 6 and 6.5 barrel blank sitting on the shelf. I've got a couple Bartlein .284/7mm barrel blanks too but I think I want to stay .264 or smaller.

Only thing I'd do over a 243 is
243 AI or 6x284 (they're both about equal to each other)
6x284 will sling 115's to 3400 fps, If you're into that sort of thing
I like mod 70's, I'd have more if I didn't like a Rem 700 so much

Yah, they're both super cool rounds, just a little more HP than I'm wanting, or needing. I don't want to be swapping barrels out every 1K rounds. I had a 240 WBY for a short period of time. Fast 6mms are awesome, but there's definitely a price you pay for them.

I like a nice model 70 action, butter smooth. Always wanted a semi custom off a model 70. All mine have been off R700s or Vanguards.

Kinda been leaning towards the 6 GT. I think it would make sense in the lighter weight rifle. Batrel life, accuracy, tunability, alresdy have the components besides brass and dies. Plus I wouldn't have to do anything with the mag box as their COALs are like 2.5"-2.6"

Still have my 16# 6 Creed for the long range work.

I know Winchester calls this model a "Coyote Light" but there really isn't anything lightweight about these things. They're about on par with the Remington VSSF models.

Only differnece is these are 24" medium varmint contours at .750" The Rem varmints are 26" with Rem varmint/sendero contours at .830" Both fluted. So yah 2" more barrel and .080" thicker on the Rems, not a ton of difference, but a little.

I wish this was the original coyote with the 26" heavy barrel and laminated stock. Those are super nice accurate rifles.

Imo id rock that 243 w 70’s and win760! Run that mother and then do it again or Ackley improved. 243 w 70’s is thors hammer and no joke on coyotes. Run it and save your big guns for far away.

Yes it is. In my humble opinion, it's about the perfect yote cartridge. I've killed a pile with a 243. I ended up getting on that 6 creed train though and been using it lately as my dedicated dog rifle. No difference between the 2.

I'm still thinking hard on the 6 GT when it's time for a rebarrel. Just seems very efficient and at least double the barrel life over a 243.

6 GT with the Berger 87 Gr VLD. You will be very impressed with the way that cartridge/bullet performs. I have a bunch of custom rifle. 6X47, 6BRA, 6BR etc. The 6GT with the 87 VLD is quickly becoming my very favorite. I'm getting around 3100 fps with a 22" barrel. That bullet will work great with a 10" twist---a 9" twist is probably better but I have shot some really small groups with the 10' twist #4 barrel...VV N 540 will probably work well in it also....
