Model 1917 Winchester barrel question

So the barrel tenon is .800 with a 45 degree cone. Then a extractor cut of .410 - which - on my barrel that I took off is at the botton of that cone.

why not just make a flat face and forget about the 45 deg cone - no need to time it.

I've rebarreled quite a few of both. Have a 17 barrel in the lathe as we speak. Feeding is the main reason for the cone. Can be done ether way. The 14s have a flat breach, but the extractor cut is cut back into the barrel when using the 14 extractor. The left lug on the 14 bolt also buts a small flat near the flat breach. The 17 bolts have a matching cone angle on the left lug.. When I rebarrel 14's unless its a restoration, ill cut a cone in the barrel.

Not cutting the cone IMO would be pointless and defeat one of the reasons for using a 1917 action.

How much clearance did you cut for the bolt? Even if you went with 20 thou clearance, you should still have the case covered.20220402_123531.jpg

Here's a standard case. Just happen to be doing a few lately.

Thanks for posting this - its what I ended up with. The drawing needs updated..
Yes, the drawing shows basically the cone out to the thread minor diameter, which isn't how they normally are. They usually tend to have a flat ring on the back as shown in my photos. I usually thread to the action, start cutting the cone, then base my depth on bolt nose clearance. These are fairly "loose" so I usually do 10-15 thou clearance.

At that point, you should be able to cut the extractor cut to the base of the chamber and you should have proper extractor clearance. Of course its still an old military action, so you may need to double check all the fitment.
