Model 100 Winchester accuracy issues

A friend of mine bought Winchester model 100 in 284 off of Gun Broker (probably the issue).
He tried sighting it in but it shoots 6-7" groups at 100 yds with 3 different kinds of ammo. He brought it to me I stripped it down and gave it a throw cleaning. It took a couple of soaks and some scrubbing to get the barrel clean but it did come out pretty good after I examined it with the borescope.
I just got back from the pit (range) and 9 shots at 75 yds were 6+".
I think its possible that the barrel could be shot and the reason it was sold on Gun Broker.
Is there anything else I should look at?

Those 100’s were known for firing out of battery. The bolt can be almost closed and you can still touch off a round. I have first-hand experience with this issue. Really scary. So besides for being extremely dangerous that also may be contributing to accuracy issues. Personally, I swore off ever using one of those rifles again.

Winchester 100 doesn’t like group with lots of shots, things start heating up and there’s a bunch of still all on one side of the barrel.
As Tommie states they may fire out of battery. Keep clean, especially in locking lug area, and oiled.
If reloading don’t load for cases to close tight, also contributes to bolt not closing.
It’s always been a 100 yard deer rifle. One good shot from cold barrel and rest at running game.
Doesn’t like heavy bullets….or light bullets…in 7mm just shoot 140 or so.

And it looks cool.

Look at the crown under magification of some kind and see if it looks smoothe and even all the way around. A dinged up crown can cause all kinds of problems.

These were all factory loads. I dont load for anyone besides my wife and grandson who lives with us.

I recommended he sights in cold bore. He normally hunts deer in tight areas here in Maine so i guess it will work. He owns close to 100 rifles and wants to use this.
I told him he should sell a few and build one nice custom rifle or 3 lol.
