Modacam Custom Rifles

I hadn't heard of anyone using in sanctioned RFBR. I had the impression that they're more into the NRL22/PRS22 scene. Not saying they not capable of building a decent RFBR rifle, but if I'm going to spend that kind of money I'm going with someone who specializes in it.

Jonathan just built my new rifle. I only shoot from a bench but it’s not an UL style build. He does fantastic work, 3 or 4 of the top 10 rifles at the NRL world championship were built by him. I have never heard a single negative comment about his work. Have you talked to him?

My personal IR 50/50 UL setup for this year.

I had Jonathan build me a PRS build with my Rimx action and could not be more pleased with the way it shoots. I would not hesitate to have him build me another .22 rimfire rifle regardless of the discipline of shooting.

Nice looking rifle. What barrel did you fit? So, although it’s early days, what kind of IR cards is it shooting?
Thanks. I set me aside a .900 straight from Paul on an order of 8 groove Mullers that came in. I shot two cards yesterday at the local match range with it trying to pick between some Midas and Xact. The midas shot a 249 with a high x count. The Xact shot a 250 with lower x count than the Midas. I picked the Midas though because the only reason it didn’t shoot 250 was a condition I missed, confirmed by the guy shooting with me with that same 6:00 miss on that shot. Testing 5 shot groups at the shop I also picked the Midas. It’s rough tuned at the moment. I’ll mess with that more this week if I get an opportunity. I’m liking the rifle though. First Rotex I’ve had. It’s the only IR rifle for me I’ve got ready and it’s a while before UL cranks up here. I’m going to try to get me at least one more setup. Either 13.5 or sporter.

Xact left Midas right

Seems to be a solid start. Gotta get a sporter and shoot 3 gun as well……tough but fun.
circle back with your thoughts on the 8 in the wind. There is a fair opinion they don’t deal with wind as well. That said I am getting one fit as we speak….already have a 4&5……we’ll see.

It got really windy yesterday. It fared well I thought. Certainly not a no wind situation. We have a lot of these in 1.18 straight contour out there in NRL and PRS. Comparing to 6 groove Kriegers I don’t really see a difference wind wise. Measurable anyway for that sport.

I’ve got enough stuff to do either a 10.5 or 13.5 minus the stock so that’s probably what I’ll do next. I am fitting a CZ sporter soon for someone so I’m interested in how that works out too. The sporters are an interesting twist on the game for sure.

To more directly answer, time will tell for me also vs mostly the Shilens and Benchmarks. I have a bunch of Benchmarks coming too to compare. I wanted Shilen too but man I was told a long time. I do have an order of 4R cut barrels from Dan coming also. Initial testing has been very good for what I’ll be using them on.

We do a lot of testing at 200 on the PRS guns. For me that’s mostly Muller 8 groove and Krieger 6. They both do surprisingly well at the long range. I don’t really see much difference wind wise to say one is better than the other. The Kriegers are consistent and have been good for me but I really like Paul’s barrels and how much he cares about the product he’s producing.

Pierre took first amongst custom benchrest rifle shooters with a 750 49X shooting for the first time for his new 2500X/ Benchmark 3 grove gun smithed by Jon Elrod of Modacam Custom Rifles .

Jonathan has an action of mine right now.

Looking forward to getting it back. I know it will be an awesome shooter like every other rifle he has done for me.

Don't know who Pierre is but I pay attention to who people are using for RFBR builds. Seems @jelrod1is doing some fine work. I still have my preferences as far as who I would choose to do a RFBR build. That said, I wouldn't shy away from having Modacam build me a rifle if my preferred RFBR guys were no longer taking on work. I'd certainly choose Modacam over another some of the other guys who are trying to dabble in RFBR. It's nice to have choices and it's good to see some new guys having some success.

Nice score by Pierre. Is it safe to assume that was shot on the IR50 target?

Thanks guys. I've had an overwhelming backlog of messages and emails. I'm about caught up on them. If anyone is left out give me a call or text message.

PWNolan,

Thanks for the kind words. Pierre is the California State Champion I believe in IR50. He's been using a 2500x barreled here this year and has been fortunate enough to have won the first three matches with it.

I will also add that Jonathon built the rifle that won the Intl Worlds PRS 22 build that was held back in Aug of 2024 (in addition to a number of other rifle builds that finished in the top 20). ;)

I’m a sling shooter not a Benchrest shooter so excuse my ignorance. How good is a 750-49x? Is that shot outside in the wind at 50 yards/meters? I’m guessing that’s 75 shots. What’s the diameter of the 10 and X ring?

I think Mr. Nolan would know the diameters of the 10 and X rings used in IR/50 shooting. He is a very knowledgeable individual.

Hi Ron or anyone;
For those of us who have never seen a real bench rest target, how big is the x and 10 ring.

Hi js2013,
His score was a 100% of the possible points with a 60% x count, High Master in NRA terms. The shooting was as close to perfect as anyone can come. He belongs in national and international competion.
