Awaiting delivery on this rifle. Expect to use it as a donor. Can't make up my mind whether to change it 17 fireball or 20 vartarg. Both are sort of interesting. while making up my mind I will enjoy shooting the highest velocity commercial round out there - the 204 Ruger. It is supposed to be a winner. With a new bolt head - lots of options. So many options so little time/money.

The Savages don't feed real well in the Fireball/Vartarg cartridges. I've tried with both stagger feed and centerfeed mags. Just something to consider. You can always download the 204 to Vartarg velocities if you want or go to 17-204 or 17 Practical/tactical too, like you said the posibilties are almost endless.

I have had several rifles in 204 Ruger. All shoot the 32 Sierra bullets best except the Savage which did best with the 32 Hornady`s. If your going to hunt coyotes with it in 204 use rather Hornady or Berger bullets and stay away from Sierra bullets. The jackets on the Hornady bullets is .014 thick and the Sierra jackets are .009 thick and just to soft for coyotes. They are great for groundhogs though. For get the 17 - 204. If you are wanting something like that get the 17 Rem. The same think, but you can get factory ammo for it.

Got the rifle and bought some Hornady 32 grain v max ammo. The darn gun shots very nice for a low cost factory kit. Better than 1/2 moa in 3 different range sessions. it is not bench rest quality but certainly up to any varmint shooting accuracy need. I am now hesitant to take it apart. Another example of never shoot the donor!!! One draw back is the darn magazine. what a piece of crap, it is very difficult to even load the magazine. Any shooting need I have I single feed through the port.
