Mirage

Several times I have gone to a range where the mirage is so bad I have to dial my scope down to 10 power to see the clay birds we sight in on. I use a mirage sheild on my barrel.

Any tips?

It's a matter of reading the mirage. You can wait for conditions to be good to shoot. You can also try to bracket the target in the reticle. This won't get you by in benchrest, but might help with steel or f-class

This is where EXTREME accuracy comes in.. Last September we had the "Texas State Rifle Assn Mid-Range Championship".. There was little wind, somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 m.p.h. However, I have NEVER, and I mean NEVER seen heat waves (mirage) like that! We were at 600 yards and at times I was literally looking at a "blank" target. There were times that the lines disappeared almost altogether with your scope on high power. Yet it made little difference scaling the power ring back. BUT if you found some "spot" or some "point-of-aim" that allowed you to steer the projectile into the 10 ring, you did well! The guys that had accurate enough loads, say under 2" at 600 yards, could slightly mishold on their target and still stay inside the 10 ring! But if you had a 1/2 M.O.A. rifle, you were NOT going to "mishold" to some small degree and stay inside the 10 ring. Ken Dickerman, a member of Bayou Rifles, shot a 1200 (over 2 days) with, I believe in excess of 75 "X"'s.!! Also both he and FalconPilot (Jim Fowler) shot a match each that netted them a National record with a 200-19X! But these guys have EXCEPTIONALLY accurate rifles, KNOW how to shoot in severe heat waves, to some degree, and found a "spot" on the target that would allow them into the X or 10 ring because if they "missed" their "hold" by a bit, it would STILL stay true! But this is MY 2 cents...

The only thing that a beats accurate gun
Is a more accurate gun in the hands of great shooter. Larry

With the Double Dot reticle, I am able to center the dot in the white square on the target.
While it works, it does not permit the percise targeting available on days with less mariage
at high power.

Any Ideas on how to aim more percise on days like this?

Anyone trying to shoot in mariage at high power on the scope?

That's why I like the OLD NightForce CH3 reticle.. Also the NEW Nightforce (on the Comp Model) I think it is a DDR-2 or some such nomenclature. But it is a small dot for much more precise holding..

I'll second the CH-3 reticle. Both of my competition rifles wear Nightforce BR's with this reticle so you can bracket the target. It is a shame that Nightforce quit producing scopes with the CH-3. I will never part with my CH-3 reticle scopes.

+1

At times you couldn't see a 3" spotter. Muddy was a understatement.
