Minimum distance from barrel to Obj bell.

I have a Rem. SPS 308. I need to know the absolute minimum tolerance between the barrel and scope bell. A hard number, not opinions . Not real concerned about heat transfer, (well maybe). thanks

We set ours so scope and barrel are max of 1/8". Customers with different stocks require more for proper eye to scope orientation. But the 1/8" allows for any flexing of......barrel, rings, scope, and action (bedded) play on most rifles except a 408 or 50. They need more room to quiver. The lower your scope to the bore, the better.

Thanks for the replies, not sure what "408 or 50" means in terms. I suppose I could put a piece of plastigage (used to check engine brgs/clearance), then measure after shooting to see if/what flex may be going on. I have a Rem SPS w 20" bull bbl, and Burris scope w/30mm tube. The bell at the angle/objective is at .010" clearance. I can move it forwards some, which will increase this dimension, but I really would like to keep it where it is.

I had a guy bring a rifle to me for some work and I noticed the bell on the scope was touching the barrel. I mentioned this to him, and he said "the guy that mounted it for me told me it'd be 'stouter' that way." Who'd 'uv thunk it!?

That guy chambers barrels full time no doubt. Im sure alot of people are lined up to use him too- seems thats the way it is.

Wow , this got heated in a hurry. I would never mount a scope touching. I like to mount as close to bore as I can-but mostly because I want the gun to fit me without having to relocate my face to see correctly. I don't like "building up' the stock, ( fully adjustable target stocks are not what I am referring to). My 270 has probably .180' gap or so. My varmit .223 w/laminate target stock has scope/bbl gap @ .096" or so. My latest Rem SPS with the scope bell @ 2.20" dia obj is .010" gap, but when looking through scope-stock fits my cheek perfectly every time.

Personally i like em as high as i can get em but i shoot short range BR. If i wanted it close id say if you can pass a dollar bill under it youll never have a problem. Any closer and it may touch and you dont want that.

Thanks Dusty. I plan to shoot it soon. I think I will stick a piece of .008" plastigage right underneath. if the scope does flex it will mash it thinner (therefore measurable afterwards). I will post results. of course I hope I get "No" measurable reading/results.
