Minimum barrel diameter at chamber

I have a 6.5mm barrel blank with messed up threads. I’m wanting to cut off the damaged section and use barrel to make a bolt action pistol in 6.5 creedmoor. If I do this the chamber is going to be cut into the barrel past the 1.25” diameter. Diameter of the barrel at the beginning of the chamber taper would be around 1.110”. Chamber bore size at that point is .462”. Figuring barrel wall thickness at the chamber:
1.110”-.472”=.648”
.648”/2=.324”
So the barrel thickness at the chamber should end up around .324”. Is this still enough thickness to be safe? I have googled and found minimum barrel thickness for 30/06 is .215”. Is that correct? If so I thinking I should be fine.

Savage small shank is 1.055" OD. They hold that through the chamber. Lot of 6.5 CM on small shank savage threads out there.

IF you have an issue it would be lack of shoulder. I would just pay attention to how much "crush" you get when you torque the barrel.

Edit... you could always add a shroud

Good point about both the shoulder and shroud.

I don't know the rules but I think that kind of a project gets complicated when using a 700 action.
This action was bought as a bare action so serial number is not tied to a rifle. I will not be using a pistol brace or vertical grip. I’m thinking these are the things that makes building one of these kinda sketchy legally. It’s basically the same as buying a bare AR action and building a pistol with it.

There’s no rule against a pistol having a vertical grip as in say like a Contender or an XP.

New bare actions are neither a pistol or rifle and are logged as “receiver” or some log it as “action only”. A BATF letter tells me it should be “receiver”. They (the action “receiver”) become what you first build them as. If you build it first as a rifle then it can never (legally) become a pistol. If you build it first as a pistol it can later become a rifle but it can’t go back to a pistol once you do.

I have a BATF response letter filled away on bare actions. I’ll see if I can find it. I’ve posted it on this site before.

Just fyi here and you're probably aware but, peak pressure normally happens at about 1-3" in front of the chamber on virtually any cartridge. Just think how thin some bbls are out there. AR's are another example where the bbl is pretty small out there, like an m4 std contour.

Hodgdon thinks the highest pressure is inside the chamber.
The bullet moves into the rifling as the powder starts to burn, and peak pressure isn't reached until the full charge is burning. The distance the bullet travels before peak pressure will depend on the details of the caliber - powder, primer, bullet, case, etc.

I would kinda be interested in that that letter says. Some of those rules are kinda hard to understand and can be interrupted differently. I am a type 7 FFL so I can legally build guns because I report what I build. I don’t build a lot though for various reasons.

It (the letter) and a discussion over “action only” “receiver” and pistol builds here:
