Milestone- my first custom

I finally got my first real custom Benchrest gun. Bat MB multi flat, coned bolt RBRP, Krieger 9 twist 1 1/4 in bull, 30 in. Long. 6mmBR. Jewel trigger. I got it in a trade deal on the sale board, here. I've been shooting factory , semi customs and vintage military until today. I guess it's not a big deal in this company of shooters but I'm pretty excited. No one to share with at home. The Wifey's eyes just glazed over when I brought it home today

You could feed that thing cat litter and still get .5MOA. Great looking first custom (any custom for that matter) Seems like its starting to take hold of you, this accurate rifle stuff I think you also just ordered one of those "cheap" repeaters as well;) . Seems like some 95 bergers will get that going. what are you going to be shooting?

Thanks. Yes, I have a Mausingfield on order, a new Lederer 6mm barrel and a litely used Jewell sitting on the bench. I have been down with a touch of the flu and spending my time reloading and here. Saw this pop up on the sale board and the guy took a trade deal I offered. I let go of a semi 308 that I don't shoot much anymore,so it didn't cost me anything.:) I have to cast the chamber to get the neck and throat specs, as the seller wasn't sure. I got 300+ Berger 105s, a hundred Lapua brass and a set of dies with the gun. I'm fairly sure the dies are Progressive sizer with a Redding Mic seater. They look the same as those pictured in the Tubbs 6xc thread. Yeah, I'm hooked. Think the 105s will shoot in the 9 twist? My other 6br is an 8. It's a Krieger on a remmy action. It's ok with the 105s.

Meh. . .It might up close. . .might. but I'd personally not even try them. I'd got straight to the berger 95's, 30gr. Varget .010 off hard jam and play from there but thats me. Also if the neck diameter is on the barrel I'd make sure my brass was right and just find my jam without casting it - thats just me again I'm not telling you what to do. There are other bullets to play with and powders but I would suggest sticking with the 95's because I don't think the BR will be able to get the 105's moving enough to keep it stable but I could be wrong. RL 15 would be another top choice but I'd still stick with the 95's. I'm not positive on other custom bullet maker's but they might have 95's so check with them maybe (BIB, EPS, Vapor, Precision Ballistics etc.)

Again, thanks for the thoughts. This gun has a few riddles. The seller bought it from a friend he shoots with occasionally. It was the sellers first bench gun and admitted he was "over his head" with this gun. The barrel is not marked. The brass that came with the gun is turned. I haven't mic' it yet, but even if I do I won't know the clearance in the chamber or the throat. I rolled the dice a little on this acquisition, but the pedigree of the parts of the gun incline me to believe the builder knew what he was doing. We'll see what she can do. I'll get some 95s, load them along with some 105s and get back to you.

The gunsmith should be able to tell you the neck size and freebore. Good luck with it. Matt

I cast the chamber and mounted a scope today. The 12-42 NF was 1/8 in. too big so I put an 8-32 on it for now. The neck is .270. The brass that came with the gun mic'd at .268 . I have some other Lapua skimmed to .267 and another 100 turned to .266. I also have some 75 grain Hornady V-max so I can shoot it with those until I get some 95 Bergers. Can't wait to hit the range.

Hey, Potatoe! What's a guy from York doin all the way down here? I live about a mile south of the Pa. Border. Just below Kennett Square, in De.. A bit north of the mall. Were you prowling Cabela's?

I went over there for Cabela's and such. I do a good bit of cruising around Cecil Co. MD and go into DE some. If you ever get bored I'd be happy to go shooting, I go to So. Lancaster some, but I'd have no problem heading over your way for a trip

Hey, that sounds like fun. I'll give you fair warning: I'm not that good, yet. Still learning. Let me get some loads worked up for this new rig and look for a weather window. I'll pm my # to you.

You sure it's a 9 twist?
Ya know, that's a good point! I guess I shouldn't assume that it is. Off to measure. And back. I couldn't get a good consistent grab with a brush and patch and I don't have a 6mm jag, yet. I hit the range yesterday with some loads using Hornady 75s and 105s. The smallest groups were in the threes, at 100 yards. The 105s shot fine with Varget, as usual in my other 6br and the 75s were loaded with Viht-135. Both were jammed .01. I'll play with it some more before I call foul on the chamber job.(see guns and Gunsmithing forum)
