Mildew Removal from Target Stock

The dehumidifier in the gun room failed and I now have white mildew on the black stippling of my Anschutz target rifles and in the checkering of a couple shotguns. Wanted to get some suggestions before I try to clean them up. I'm concerned that bleach may affect color of the stocks or stippling. Any experience with something that will kill the mildew but not affect the wood adversly?

Borax dissolved in hot water. Let it cool. The borax should kill the mold and soft tooth brush to brush it away. You can also make a paste and apply it. Same borax you use in your washer! If you use Vinagar or Borax or Backing Soda or an oxidizer like peroxide or bleach in every case you will need to clean it all off and retreat the wood and metal as you would after a day out hunting in snow and rain. Bleach does not kill it all just the spores and it might damage the wood and it is very corrosive to metal even SS knives in a dishwasher rust. Most commercial products will have a oxidizer and some metallic salt like copper or they will some type of toxic phenol compound that is toxic to human organs. So start with something mild like soap and water and a soft brush, then try borax dissolved in water and a soft brush. Borax is $3 for a huge box in your laundry detergent isle at your local store. Mold tunnels into things and can leave pits. Colored wax or home made French polish can be used to fill in those pits with out the need to refinish the entire stock!
