Mike Davis' 6BRX BAT action

Quick question for those of you with BAT or other custom actions.
Is the smoothness of the action noted in the video of Mike Davis' BAT typical? I have worked the action of only one other custom and it was not that smooth.
If it isn't typical, any ideas what would have to be done to get it that way...trigger timing, etc...
Thanks. I am realizing that my non-custom makes it much more challenging to get shots off rapidly and with any accuracy in a steady condition.

Yes it is typical....I have mostly Kelbly actions ...and they all work as smooth as silk...the Kelbly line and BAT are the two best IMHO...this is somethnig that most folks dont know or even suspect!!! Most folks that shoot Rem,and I am a Rem fan)...or Win or Savage etc...have no idea how cumbersome and awkward the are...compared to a Quality custom...they shoot just a good...but you cant piddle and fiddle around in a shooting match...you gotta let em fly when the wind is rite...once agin IMHO....Roger

savet06,

Yes, the smoothness is typical. I have had several different custom actions,Kelby, Bat, Nesika, etc.), they all work smoothly, but the Bat I feel has a little bit of an edge. Trigger timing is critical and Bat offers different trigger hangers for timing the trigger. I have a model B 7.5" round and a model SV 6" round - both are RB/LP/RE and one is as smooth as the other. Now days they are all very close in price. My money would go towards another new Bat.

Thanks for your interest in the video.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. I don't think I could ever have appreciated how slick they truly are. I watched the video several times, and then went downstairs to my safe, sighed deeply and realized that the adds for "buy the best and cry once" are really true. I will learn a lot about how to shoot with my rig, but don't think it will ever be truly competitive,at least not on a consistent basis).
Ah well. Maybe it will make a nice live varmint rig or something.

Thanks again.
Mike

P.S. congratulations on your record, Mr. Davis. I am just getting started in the benchrest sport, and am beginning to appreciate what it takes to put a string like that together.
Very nice shooting.

Mike,

If possible, could you elaborate a bit on "trigger timing" and also do you mean that BAT hangers are just different from everyone else's, or that you can choose from multiple hangers for their actions?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Mark,

Bat makes two different trigger hangers for 1.365" dia. actions. You can move the trigger from .000 to .030" forward or backward to time the trigger. What I look for is a smooth bolt lift with no excessive travel of the firing pin in the rearward position. What I mean by excessive motion is if you watch the firing pin while you are cocking the action - if the firing pin goes back and then moves forward any while you are closing the bolt the trigger needs moved forward until the forward motion of the firing pin is gone. In other words when you are closing the bolt the firing pin does not go back and then forward. I know this sounds complicated, but it is hard to put in words what I am trying to explain. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Mike

The bolts on either my 3 lug or SV BATS slide in the receiver like little greased pigs.
I wish my 700's did as well :,
