Mid-range F-Class optic choice

Hey Guys, was hoping to get some opinions on an optic choice from some of you well seasoned F-Class shooters. Will be used for midrange F-Class 3,5 and 600yards only Will not be shooting long range F-Class

My choices are either a SIII 8-32x56 or NF BR 12-42x56 either one will have 1/8" clicks

I have already had the SIII 10-50x60, the optic was fine but am not considering it for this build.

So at a max of 600 yards is the extra power of the NF needed? Thanks

You will use it if you have it (power). I like the NF 12x42 DD

Interesting question. I have had exactly the same question for me and my rifles. I use a 6mm BR and 6.5 x 47 for the mid-ranges while using 300's for the longs. I use the 6mm mostly so that I can practice holding in the wind because the 300 are so wind insensitive that you can ignore most mid-range conditions. You sure can't for the 6's.

I decided on the Sightron 8 x 32 with the 1/8 MOA for 2 reasons. The first is I have eye trouble and the 8 x 32 simply works better for my eyes than the 10 x 50 and allows me to focus better and, secondly, I wanted the reduced power so that it simulates shooting at longer reasons. I only use 40 power for the long ranges so 32 power at the shorter ranges gives the target sizes roughly of the longer ranges. I also decided on the crosshair/dot so I can practice holding off by lines for team shooting.

I don't see why I need to shoot 40 power at the mid ranges anymore.

Also, the Sightron 8 x 32 is a very clear scope that is very close to the glass used in the Nightforce for half the cost.

My opinion for F-Class glass now is buy Sightron or March. For the price point I can't see buying a Nightforce. I now I probably will get flamed for that statement but that is my experience and opinion.

I love having the extra power when I can use it. It helps me.

I also have the new NF 15x55. I love it when I can use the full 55 power. It makes the 3" X ring look like a pie plate. I can place the dot inside of the X ring anywhere I want. NICE

I decide not be a cheap *ss. I went with the NF mainly because they hold value so good and I know it will hold up over the abuse of recoil over time.

I also had to listen to my good buddy Bob Pastor bitch at me this morning about going with the NF too. If any of you know Bob really well, you know what I'm talking about:-)

I'm do not understand the highlighted statement. In Highpower, the size of the aiming black increases with the distance, as does the size of the scoring rings. So unless you use the exact same target for all distances, lowering the magnification at shorter ranges does not really simulate the experience of longer distances. Also, beyond 500 yards, the challenge is much more about conditions rather than raw precision. I will say that when shooting at 300 yards, I want all the magnification I can get so I can surgically place my bullets in that miniature X-ring. At 1000 yards, it's more like steering the bullet through the conditions to get to the bigger X-ring.

There's more to a riflescope than just the glass. Think reticle, adjustments precision and repeatability, longevity, etc.

I totally agree and that is why I shoot March scopes for the competitions and serious shooting. However, it is my opinion that for close range local matches and mid-range practice the Sightron 8 x 32 is good enough and a well priced alternative to the Nightforce, S & B and March.

in my opinion go with the 42 power. i shoot an 8-32 nxs in mid range f-class and wish i had more power for those early morning relays when mirrage isn't an issue. this being said when the 15-55 2014 model comes out i will have one. ;D

Eddie,

I know Da Viper pretty well, and can imagine the conversation...LOL! You should have bought a March. But then I'm like Steve above, while I've owned NF scopes in the past, I don't feel the need to do so now. I do have an SIII that I like very much for some applications, F class is not one of them. I think they are very clear, crisp, repeatable scopes for the money.

I would have gone with a 10 x 50 Sightron but my eyes have trouble with the focus adjustments on the 10 x 50 series whereas I don't on the 8 x 32 series. I have owned and sold about 4 - 5 10 x 50's over the years and ended up selling all of them for the same reason. Never had any adjustment issues or mechanical problems with any of the Sightron scopes. Steve

Why not use a March scope.

March scopes are nice but I can't afford one, and quite frankly when I looked through them next to a NF BR and a SIII my eyes couldn't see the $$$ difference. I've had the SIII 6-24, 8-32 and the 10-50's.

I know the SIII are good too, but just decided to go with the 42X for the extra power and face it, they hold value better than the SIII's.

If I had the coin, I would of waited and bought the new Competition NF

To each their own.

I would of loved to buy the March but I'm just a poor white boy:-)

i'm with you a march i'd love to own one but cant afford one new and i've read on the board somewhere that the warranty is only for the origonal owner so used is out too. i like the sIII 10x50 cost wise and clarity the only reason i dont own a NF is making weight with one .
