Mid-Range .223 FTR Rifle

Late last year I put a Benchmark .223 1-8 twist on a Savage action to try at F-Class Mid-Range. I built a good shooting load with 75 gr. Amax's and H4895. Every 5, 6, and 7 shot groups at 200 yards were ragged holes. I never took it to 600 till last weekend, I went to AIM in Blakley, GA. for the monthly 600 yarder. We only got to shoot 2 relays due to bad rains that came in and lasted the rest of the day. First relay I shot a 193 5X, second relay 191 4X which was in heavy rain and fairly bad swirling winds. I did not take my plot book, but looking back I see were I would have shot higher had I trusted the ability of this 75 gr. bullet. My vertical is no more then x-ring tall, Not once did I shoot out of the 10 at 3 o'clock. I had 1- 12 o'clock 9 that was a truely a bad shot on my part, and the rest were 6 and 7 o'clock from let offs and wind direction changes. Still learing, but I can say this, this .223 is a hoot to shoot for 600 yard Mid-Range. I like it alot... ;D

The weather on that second relay was lovely eh? I was the one that couldn't get the wet powder out of my chamber after I pulled a bullet on shot #20. I still have a hard time believing I had no Impact when I finally did get a round chambered. I guess I can see why though when I look at the case with the crushed kernels of 4895.

Which lane were you?

Yes, I believe I will shoot a .223 for Mid-Range for awhile.... It is fun.

I was on target 15. My cousin and I were driving the white double cab dually. For me the rain wasn't so bad, it was when the wind shifted from left to right to almost a headwind. I'd brake the shot, target would go down, and immediately see the change and know where the spotter was going to be. I'd say to my self why couldn't it just wait till after impact, hate when that happens.

Which target were you on?

I was right next to you on 16. I shot first phase and worked pits for 2&3. Did your .223 have the drop box with the dark metal? I will have to get a lot better before I try one. That's like shooting doves with a .410. :)
