The worst part is they used sporting dollars from hunters to fund all this. MattI don't believe that is an accurate description of why it was shut down. I never dug into that but I think it was a matter of the antis finding a sympathetic Federal judge willing to believe their lies and subsequently relist the wolves. This of course takes away the State's ability to establish any hunting season to control the numbers. I can say though that concerning WI and MI numbers, they are published lower than what the guys in the field are saying. I don't know the reason why this happens. I have my own idea for why some of these population models are not in line with what the grunts in the field are seeing, but it is speculation. I do subscribe to a one plus one equals two philosophy however.
Your correct Timeout, a sympathetic liberal Federal judge shut it all down. I also believe wolves were trapped and moved into areas of Central WI.I don't believe that is an accurate description of why it was shut down. I'm in far Southern WI. Whenever wolves have been shot here by people claiming that they "thought it was a coyote" no tickets have been issued. The DNR has DNA tests done and then say that the wolf was not genetically "pure" wolf. I have seen photos of one that was shot very nearby. There is no doubt in my mind it was a wolf. The guy shooting it knew that it was a wolf when he pulled the trigger. He got scared so reported it and then used the "I thought it was a coyote" excuse. I believe the DNR claims these far South shot wolves were not genetically pure is to avoid admitting they are this far South. I could be wrong of course.Your correct Timeout, a sympathetic liberal Federal judge shut it all down. I also believe wolves were trapped and moved into areas of Central WI.
We can only hope they get reclassify to big game for both MI. and WI. I would rather have them considered a pest and put a daily bag limit and bounty on them!![]()
Or could be that they too believe wolf management is necessary and that there hands are tied by the feds listing them endangered. Our DNR is pretty tired of paying restitution for livestock being killed and family pets being chewed off leashes. They want to have a hunt as bad as the sportsman do because management IS necessary. Turning a cheek or justifying a hunters claim of a shooting being a mistaken identity is part of that officers discretion. He deems it justified or intentional poaching. Could be like you said, the DNR not wanting to admit geography change or simply identification error.I'm in far Southern WI.
