Can you get a gear or gears to to cut metric threads on a heavy 10 south bend. I might want to cut some metric threads someday. Thanks! Mark

Westex,
Using a 127 teeth gear as driven gear on the Norton gearbx shaft should allow to find a setting corresponding exactly to most of metric pitches.

with the change gear mentioned by Mr. Chombart, you will need to keep the half nuts engaged at all times and do the "make a pass/retact tool/reverse/advace tool/ start again" shuffle, not a big deal just something to remember...Such is the life with cutting metric threads on an english lathe (or cutting threads without a thread dial)

SkinnJ,

The 127 teeth gear is the simplest I can recommend. The diial indicator method need at least a dial indicator nit always availabel on old machines, need the non-skilled operator to learn how to work it and is subject to errors...

The forwad-reverse is the simlest.
