Merchant marines...

Thinking of my Dad today, and all the stories he shared about his time in the Merchant Marines sailing around the world a few times. It took them a long time to get their official Veteran status . He would not share much of the war stories,we mostly heard about the up beat times at port . He always said to live in the present, not to dwell on the past. I would like to pay tribute to anyone that has ever served this country . Thank you

My career began in the Merchant Marine, and I was also in the naval reserve for awhile. I was only entitled to wear 3 ribbons on my Navy uniform, but one of them was my Merchant Marine Vietnam service ribbon. Among Navy ribbon watchers, it caused some consternation, as most Navy people didn't recognize it. My favorite stories were about port visits - they were a lot more than getting shot at. :)

My dad who just recently passed was a merchant marine during WW II.
Thanks for the thread.

Thanks for chiming in guys, I was hoping there would be some Merchant Marines to notice the thread. The last date on all my Dad's papers is 1948,I am not sure of his total years . He went on to work with steam the rest of his life as a Stationary Engineer for the state of NY .

We lived near the St. Lawrence river ,and would spend countless hours watching the ships go through the locks heading to the great lakes and out to the ocean . He loved educating us on every aspect of ships and shipping...this went on for 52 years of my life before he passed away in 2013 . I have all his medals and papers, mixed in there are photos from around the world with new friends . My favorite is the certificate he received for circling the world on his fist trip round, the name escapes me,something Neptune ?

Thanks again for replying ,my Dad would be happy to hear it . Too bad he is not here ,he could talk your ears off . He was on the Scott E. Land and I believe the Atterbury(?) , only names that come to mind right now .
