Meplat trimming

Hello all, Just recieved my meplat trimmer and was wondering how much of meplat as a rule is trimmed, I sorted by length and bullet oglive and trimmed up a few 105g berger vlds and noticed that some of the hollow points seem to have material in them, i have only removed a small amount from the meplats, when the meplats are trimmed is it the norm to remove from the tip material or would trimming more from the meplat ellimate the hollowpoint buildup, thanks.

Paul, I just take a straight pin and pop that flake of brass out of the hole. Wear safety glasses. Hope this helps. Bill

Thanks for replys, The meplats seem fairly consistant with the berger vlds has any of you guys found by trimming the vlds that groups improve at 600+ yards or would they also tighten up from 400y out to 1k.

I'm getting inconsistant lengths after trimming due to how much force i use pushing the bullet into the tool. Whats the secret?

When I was shooting the 6.5-284 with 142 gr. Sierras at 500 meters some years ago, I bought a meplat trimmer from Montour County Rifles. His tool has two functions: Lightly trim the bullet meplat and then a second tool removes the flattened area. Both tools are steel, work well and sell for about $65 total. Theory is that meplat trimming will make BC and thus bullet flight more consistent at long range. I was not able to see any improvement in accuracy.
