Wayne, I am pointing bullets only at the present! I am only shooting 600yds, 308 caliper. If I start shooting my 6mm in events, I will point those as well!
I just recieved my 284 Wincheter barrel! I WILL be trimming and pointing as I plan on shooting this one at several 1,000yd events! I understand this is where you will see the biggest difference.
Pointing improves my 308 accuracy @ 600yds. I must add many stated they were shooting A-Max's and have good success with them. I tried the 178's in my 308 and I was very surprised at the accuracy! I state this as many perfer this route vs trimming and pointing. Many practice with A-Max's, then shoot with their trimmed and pointed bullets!
Most of my research states if your shooting 1k plus, definetly trim and point! And this is what I will be doing! When I am at the matches, I look around. Many are trimming and pointing their bullets!
This is a wide open subject with many ideas/comments! And I am still listening!
Also, since I started digging in this subject, I pay more attention to brass prep. I turn my necks just to true them up- .0015- still leave dull spots on some brass, I clean the inside of the necks whereas before I didn't, I anneal my brass, and I trim and keep them as consistant as I can! I usually keep 150 rounds of brass for each gun, I only shoot this brass in one gun, and stick with one bullet. I have brass to experiment with if I am doing so. I have found this alone has improved my scores!
In fact, I thought about starting a thread on "inside neck consistancy"! I wonder if anybody trims the "inside" of the necks just to insure consistancy, especially when loading your bullets! I know inside neck turners "are" available, so somebody has to be using them. I know if your downsizing your necks, sometimes you will end up with a donut and this is one case where there used. But if the outside needs to be consistant, why not the inside!
