Meplat Trim & Pointing

+1 on the Hoover trimmer. I just got one and it is the best I've used so far. Montour County rifles sells a trimmer that includes a little cutter to clean out the hollow points. I don't point them down enough for that to really matter, but they do look pretty with the hollow points cleaned out. Over-pointing can bukle the jackets. I just close them up a little.

I Just purchased the wilson meplat trimmer & I must say I'm very dissatisfied with the quality. The trimmer had a few burs on the shank that I had to file before It would even fit and the 6.5 bullet holder has to be returned altogether. The main reasons I decied to try another trimmer and decided on the wilson was the fact I can use the power adapter and the micrometer for easy adjustments. I hate returning stuf!!!!!

Wayne, I am pointing bullets only at the present! I am only shooting 600yds, 308 caliper. If I start shooting my 6mm in events, I will point those as well!

I just recieved my 284 Wincheter barrel! I WILL be trimming and pointing as I plan on shooting this one at several 1,000yd events! I understand this is where you will see the biggest difference.

Pointing improves my 308 accuracy @ 600yds. I must add many stated they were shooting A-Max's and have good success with them. I tried the 178's in my 308 and I was very surprised at the accuracy! I state this as many perfer this route vs trimming and pointing. Many practice with A-Max's, then shoot with their trimmed and pointed bullets!

Most of my research states if your shooting 1k plus, definetly trim and point! And this is what I will be doing! When I am at the matches, I look around. Many are trimming and pointing their bullets!

This is a wide open subject with many ideas/comments! And I am still listening!

Also, since I started digging in this subject, I pay more attention to brass prep. I turn my necks just to true them up- .0015- still leave dull spots on some brass, I clean the inside of the necks whereas before I didn't, I anneal my brass, and I trim and keep them as consistant as I can! I usually keep 150 rounds of brass for each gun, I only shoot this brass in one gun, and stick with one bullet. I have brass to experiment with if I am doing so. I have found this alone has improved my scores!

In fact, I thought about starting a thread on "inside neck consistancy"! I wonder if anybody trims the "inside" of the necks just to insure consistancy, especially when loading your bullets! I know inside neck turners "are" available, so somebody has to be using them. I know if your downsizing your necks, sometimes you will end up with a donut and this is one case where there used. But if the outside needs to be consistant, why not the inside!

I only point my 180gr Berger VLDs now and do not trim. I have used a trimmer before (will not give the manufacturer) but had varied results and was not satisfied. Can anyone recommend a really good accurate trimmer that gives consistent results.
Thanks

Giraud trimmer, fast and accurate.

I agree with Eric 100%. The Giraud works great and is unbelievably fast and accurate.

It is a little bit of investment, but if you time is worth money to you it will pay for itself in a very short period of time.

Here's another variable....When pointing (Whidden tool) a batch a few years ago, I found that pointing causes changes in base to ogive measurement by as much as 4 thou....depending on amount of pointing pressure applied...thus altering the shape of the bullet in one important area. Makes sense since the copper/lead has to go someplace when it gets squeezed. I'll leave it up to the ballisticians to explain what difference it might make, esp if this also ? causes the front end of the bearing surface diameter to expand.

After noting the above, I only trimmed (Giraud tool) the meplats on some Berger 130 VLDS and tumbled the wee wee out of them until the sharp edge from cutting was beaded round. Result was most accurate bullet yet for me at 600 and 1000. Vertical suffered some but hey, that's what the elevation knob is for.
