Meloniting

Just got action, barrel, bolt recoil lug, muzzle brake that I sent to ParkerTruTech for Meloniting. They came back in a week looking great. Thanks Joel Kendrick and ParkerTruTech.

Good turn-around. Let me know how you like the treatment. I'm really thinking of doing a couple of barrels.

Could you tell us what the cost is they charge for the process? Which address and whom was the contact Nat. Thanks in advance if you can help.

I contacted Tru-Tech last spring and they wanted me to go through another company,,,, send to the 'other' company and then the 'other' company would send to Tru-Tech. The man on the phone at Tru-Tech gave me a couple of phone numbers so that I could call them. I don't remember the company (because I threw their contact info away immediatly after the phone call) but they wanted $250 per barrel to send it to be treated (that's why I threw out their contact info!). That's kinda' steep! I had a 'batch' of 5 SS barrels, all freshly chambered and test fired. I'd had work done at H&M and their 'batch' charge was $250,,,, they'd do all 5 for that price and I could ship to them direct. I ended up deciding to give Controlled Thermal Technologies, in Phoenix, a shot at the work and I am well satisfied. I shipped the barrels one week and they had them treated and shipped back the next week. H&M has the batch charge. So a 'batch' needs to sent to make it economically feasible. CTT will do single barrels. Their single price and their batch price were quite reasonable. Don't know what's going on at Tru-Tech, but they're not the only Melonite/Blk. Nitride treater out there. I'm glad rustystud had a good experience with his transaction. Just my experience with Melonite/Blk. Nitride treaters.

I was told $350 per batch. Multiple barrels in a batch.
The lady I spoke with was Susan she was very nice. I did not open a credit account, I will send a check with each batch.

How far down does the rifle need to be disassembled for the treatment? Bolt disassembled, bolt release, trigger, etc all removed? No springs?

Scott

Monitored a 6.5-284 barrel on a friends rifle for bore life and it was done at just over 2,000 rounds. Another barrel, same mfr., went about 1800 without the meloniting, so not enough life increase to justify the cost in my opinion. No real advantage in cleaning or copper fouling either. YMMV but just giving some observed results.

I was asked to completely disassemble a bolt that I had done, at the very least you need to make sure there are no springs in the parts that you get melonited.

Blair who did the Meloniting that only lasted 2000 rounds. Butch Lambert has a 6mmPPC with close to 10,000 rounds down the tube and going string. I spoke with a friend at Picatinny Arsenal and was told of Melonitied military rifles having 50,000 plus rounds and still shooting.

I'll let you know how many rounds this barrel gets in about 2 or 3 years.

Correct. You only want the action body and bolt body. No springs. No firing pin. Defiance told me not to do the cocking piece either. I did the action body, stripped bolt (no ejector or extractor or firing pin assembly), bolt shroud, and the bolt stop(minus the spring).

@Rustystud so, how did the barrel work out?

Ive had a couple done. I was among the first years ago then had another one done i got stuck with. If they last more than a couple hundred rounds id never know cause i cant bear to shoot em. I spend too much money and dont get to shoot often enough to compete with the broke scope guys and the crossfire guys down at the bottom of the list.

I'm in the same boat! I have rifles in my safe, that I built for myself, that I have "test fired" only, just to examine the fired brass! I built my personal .280 Ackley 3 yrs ago, I think I have 12 pieces of brass fire formed so far..........

I need some contact info for meloniting some guns, actions barrels etc. can y’all please suggest a few options that you have have pleasurable experiences with lately! Thanks!
