Melonite

I am re barreling a DTA in .243 Win. The smith that is doing the work recommends I Melonite the barrel. He claims it will double the barrel life and at $125.00 it is enticing. I would like to hear from anyone that has had this done and what your experiences have been. Does it effect accuracy will it come close to doubling barrel life. Pro and Cons please.

Thanks, Tim

I had my 6XC barrel done. Blank was by a 'brand name' maker, but, had a few tool marks in it, so, it took about 55 rds. before coppering stopped. I'd been keeping an eye on it with my Hawkeye as I had been 'breaking it in'. After the 55 rds. the corners at chambers end were rounded over more than I'd have liked. I set the barrel back 1/2 a turn and re-set the headspace, fired two rounds through it, cleaned it, scoped it again and sent it off. I now have 300+ rds. through it and see no 'rounded' edges like I'd seen after only the 55 I'd fired for 'break-in'. Accuracy has not been effected for the better or worse, she's still right there.

I have 6000+ rounds on my 223 spacegun. No discernible degradation in accuracy. Still can shoot cleans at the 600 (if I do my part). No copper fouling, using the most aggressive cleaners. Patch feels smooth throughout the barrel, as it always has. I didn't do any break-in.

BTW: This barrel is from a 'name' maker.

Your results may vary.
