Melonite surface treatment

Hi,

I have been hearing a lot of good things about the surface harding treatment called melonite. Does anyone have any experience with it? Good or Bad?

Much thanks..........Bill

I have had 3 barrels done and it greatly increased the life. Melonite QLP is used by several gun manufacturers. Joel Kendrick, IBS long range shooter of the year 2007, has been using it for several years and made me aware of it. He is working on a deal with one of the major metal companies to do it for our market.

Butch,
I was considering that treatment for a set of reloading dies. My thinking was use easily machined 12L14 steel, make my seating/sizing dies, then have them melonited. Think this is a viable idea???

Hi Butch,

Much thanks.........I went on the internet and found a company in Southern California that is close to me. I will give him a call on Monday.

What I also found out is the more barrels you have done at one time the lower the cost. Also if you have a barrel that has been shot a few times, you must remove all traces of copper before you have it processed.

Question: What does QLP mean?

Bill

Bill,
That is why I recommend Joel as the company he uses knows firearms and may get you a better deal. I need to get Joel to post contact info.

QPQ stands for Quench-Polish-Quench. Melonite is basiclly the Nu-Tride process of giving metal parts a hot salt bath resulting in ferritic nitrocarburizing. It's the same process used in harding camshaft lobes and crank shaft journals; which is the QP, Quench-Polish process.

I called the company in OHIO and they want $600 for two barrels and 2 bolts...I believe I will pass...I can just buy another high quality barrel for that price.

Boomer,
Joel assured me that better pricing is coming. Don't give up yet. I believe that is what Stiller is using on some of his bolts now.

My Kreiger was a high polish before sending it out for treatment. It looks like a high luster Weatherby black. The other 2 were not polished and looked beadblasted and blued. You can polish the color off and have a polished stainless look again. It doesn't seem to rust or corrode.

Is there any difference in durability of the QPQ version over the non-QPQ. When they say polish, what specifically do they do outside and inside the bore? What about Dies? Seems like it would be very good for dies.
