Mec press mess

Who loads with the Mec Marksman press? What is your solution to the huge mess it makes while decapping brass? Wife got me a new one for Christmas and I ordered the riser mount and got it going but this press makes a huge mess. The picture is after decapping 70 pieces of 38spl brass and it don't include what hit the floor, this is just under the press on the bench. Love the press,... hate the mess!

I would suggest a hand decapping tool. They give a good feel for pockets that may be getting loose on you.....;)

Rick

Just did a search and found this video about this press. There is suppose to be a catch tray for the primers and debris, although it looks like it requires the base accessory for the press to use this. An additional tray can be placed in the accessory base to collect any fall out. Here is a pic.

and here is the video in case you are interested.

Thanks Papa. I thought I remembered they had something, guess the engineers didn't get it quite right.
I think I know the solution for Lefty...

Some of my decapping pins hold onto primers and the way this press is made I was losing the occasional spent primer. This is my fix and turns out it could probably be the OP’s too. It’s a little expensive but effective.

The process is, buy a box of Berger bullets, I believe I used 105 hybrids, open the box, dump the contents into the trash, cut the lid off, notch the bottom portion of the box out in order to make clearance for the ram, slide your new piece under the press and your done.

I like it!! Dump the contents in the trash,... :)

I recently upgraded to an Inline Fabrication quick change stand for my press. Started with the stand only but have added an arbor press to my process and converted to the quick change plate system. Unbelievable quality and performance. My only regret was not making the purchase years ago. Have the press at eye level is so much more effective.
Dan is great to work with as well. He and his staff are amazing and very service orientated. They didn't have a special plate for my K&M Arbor Press, I order the blank to drill myself, but asked if they might have one that was just not listed on the website. They went out of their way to determine the bolt pattern and make me a custom mounting plate at no additional cost. Hard to beat service like that.

I Have one of these little buggers permanently mounted with a universal decapper over a hole through my bench with a powder flask set up underneath to catch the primers. Keeps the crud out of the way & my good dies clean:

I replaced a Lee cast iron press with the Mec and the Lee was awesome for decapping as all the primers and crap collected in a tube you just feed into the trash or empty when full,... NO mess. Now the Mec press is 10 times better so I'll figure out the mess and I think LRPV gave me a solution but I need to find a bullet box without buying and throwing away expensive Berger bullets.... ha....

I solved most of the problems, not all but most by bending this little flap (see pic) open a bit more. Large primers were jamming up here and causing a back-up. I de-primed about 150 pieces of mixed brass (9mm to 44spl) and only ended up with 2 primers on the bench but still had a pile of black dust. The black powder/dust is actually leaking out of the ram hole and I see know way to stop it due to the design of the press. but the Berger bullet box will indeed catch it, now I just need the bullet box.

I was watching that video above, and looks like he was showing a secondary tray that fit tightly on the bottom mount. Looked like a factory tray to me. Very nice looking press by the way.

I seen that, going now to look for it. Also considering the short handle. Thanks for pointing that out I must have missed it the first time...

Found it,... that little black tray under the riser mount is actually a MEC part. It appears to be a primer catch tray from their shotshell reloading press. The part number for the tray is 1008067 right from MEC. I got one ordered so will update when it arrives.
