Measuring freebore/leade??

The most accurate way would be to order a block of Cerrosafe from Brownells and follow the instructions to a T, and use the best measuring tools you have or can find
to measure the piece when it's out of the chamber....
Not really hard to do but be sure you don't leave it in the chamber longer than necessary or you will have a devil of a time getting it out with out reheating the whole chamber.

Jam length is really what's important because it is the starting point for tuning a load. It is the function of freebore/throat angle/bullet ogive. But, if you must measure freebore, Preacher's method is best because it will give you ALL dimensions of the chamber. However, it is not easy to do unless the barrel is loose, not screwed in the action). Sidewinder's method will work but for it to be accurate you have to know where the neck ends and freebore begins.

Thought I might try to measure the freebore on my Shilen barrel.
,just so I would know the length) 55s won't touch the lands but anything bigger jams real good. Never did know the "exact" length. You guys are ordering barrels with a specific length for the freebore. When Shilen built my barrel I don't think they had a selection of reamers for the 6BR. I had asked for a short throat and I took what they sent me. No matter! It shoots and cleans like a dream! Just planning ahead!;) Thinking of another 6BR for one of my Savage rifles!!:D And thanks for the input. Mike.
