Measuring Bearing Surface

DennisH

Life Time NRA member
What is your preferred method to measure bullet bearing surface?

And how critical is this measurement?

Just looking for opinions, Dennis

Very good custom bullets and Bergers are made with close tolerances, so that I no longer measure their bearing surfaces. When I did measure them, I bought a set of two identical caliber Davidson nose pieces from Sinclair, press them tightly together in my caliper and measure the bearing surface, sortlng bullets by length to the thous.

I don't measure bearing surface anymore. Using the dual comparators on my calipers, there is just too much variance in the pressure ring area of the bullet. Using a base to ogive measurement is much more accurate and gave me the consistency I was looking for. I only shoot Berger's.

I weigh them after i trim and point, then separate them by bearing surface length. Weight is very close after they are the same length. I don't care who's bullets bullets you check BIB,Spencer,JLK and Berger Bearing surface varies....... jim

John Hoover told me measuring the bearing surface is one of the most important steps.

I believe he also told me he doesn't weigh the bullets, just trim and measure the bearing surface.

Yep, that's what it boils down to in long range. Trim and point, bearing surface and neck tension and be able to weigh powder to a hundredth. A good barrel helps a lot........ :) ..jim
