McMillan vs. Savage PTA stock any experience?

Hi guys, I have a Savage PTA 6br with McGowan barrel and factory benchrest stock not bedded. I also have a McMillan MBR Tooley take off for a Savage PTA. Not bedded but torqued would the MBR be of any advantage in accuracy? It will make weight for club VBR 17lb class that I use the 6br in at 1,000yd. If it would be an advantage what should torque be? If it has pillars ,the front and middle would be 60 inch pounds and the rear about 25 inch pounds for mine anyways.

I have had a fella tell me to put 200 on them. I say he is crazy. Jon's advice is solid. Go with that. And then members try action tuning. We have an article on how to do that.

Yes sir I have used his advice with my Savage actions very helpful. In my original post I was wondering if anyone saw a gain switching stocks that weren't bedded. The McMillan MBR is obviously a high quality stock that rides the bags nicely, the Savage Bench rest stock is a mass produced laminate which is very well finished and rides the bags nicely. Jon without saying seemed to favor the MBR, I was unaware of the higher torque on it that he mentioned and will try it out. Since they are not bedded this may be the best platform with torque figures higher than what Stan Pate was using on the Savage laminates. Thanks...Ron

Your MBR should be pillar bedded for the torque values I listed.

1st, McMillian is the better stock of the two. I do use several Savage F class stocks and really don't have any negative experiences with them.

Torque: I have heard all of the above. Even several debates on bedding the stock.

Personally, I torque the front two screws to 30" lbs. The rear is torqued to 20" lbs. No problems. I have non bedded stocks that shoot just as good as my bedded stocks.

In the debates, it's always comes up that Savage is the only one that recommends torquing the action screws.

All others, just tighten good and shoot. Many tighten their Savages the same way, and many don't do any bedding to the stocks. Their rifles are just as accurate ???

I personally believe the front two should be torqued evenly, the rear slightly less. JMO
