McMillan Stock Dimensions for Custom-Drop In

Need a little help figuring out what to put on my order form for my McMillan Stock, Tooley MBR. Only using stock for my personal use, no competition just plinking, so weight not an issue.

Set Up:
BAT MB, RB, LP, SS 1.55 Round for 6mmBR
Kreiger - #17 Heavy Varmint

Questions:
1) Fill - Standard or Magnum?? If weight is no concern why no go magnum i suppose???

2) Custom Lug - Is it necessary to have a custom lug?

**3) Finished breech/cylinder length once barrel is installed on action. This is the one I really don't know what to tell them. I talked with my smith, he wasn't too concerned with this as he said if it doesn't match obviously he will inlet it out to get perfect fit. But I want to save as much trouble as I can for the smith. Here is link to kreiger if someone needs a reference https://kriegerbarrels.com/contours#bolt.

4) Machined-in Aluminum Pillars - Yes or No?

5) Adjustable cheekpiece - Do Benchrest shooters not use cheekpieces? It seems I never see them on any rifles. Is there a reason why, I've always liked having one as it takes strain off of my neck if I'm not at the perfect height.

Any questions, please let me know! I'm slightly new to building my own custom rifle, so help and guidance is always appreciated.

That's your decision, entirely. McMillan will inlet the stock for the action and barrel of your choice.

I would build it to stay under 17 pounds so if I decided to try competition. I wouldn't worry about barrel channel because the smith can open it up on a mill in short time and it will match. I like the smith to pillar bed the gun because I know it will be right. Order for a Bat action because the tang is different on REM style. That way the wrist matches the tang. I don't like my cheek touching the gun while shooting. My rings and bases keep the scope up way high. The important thing is getting the parallax out. A lot of the BATs don't use a lug, they use a cut or lug on the bottom of the action. Matt

1) Magnum fill...... it''ll help balance out the #17 barrel.

2) No lug.

3) Put in a 4" shank length. They measure from the front of the action.

4) No pillars. Let the smith put in "real" pillars.

5) No cheek piece.

You are not talking stock dimensions, but design features and barrel contour dimensions.
Call McMillan and get your answers from them. I would email them and have all your questions responded to in writing. The money you will pay is enough to demand perfection. Be sure you are pleased with their product before your 30day refund time window expires. Do NOT alter the stock in any way to make it fit.

Pillars are nice. Doubt you will torque your action screws enough to distort the synth fill, but if you have pillars you will be sure.

Benchrest shooters don't use adj cheek rest because tripod and rear bag are setup to fit you at every shoot.

Doing a Long #17 barrel? If doing a benchrest gun, typical barrel is going to be 20-22", no need for heavy fill unless you are shooting a magnum and want weight for recoil mgmt. 1000yd benchrest way different from 100/200yd shooting.

New to all this? Best touch with your gunsmith or mentor and figure all the variables BEFORE you start with McMillan.

There are other stock makers. Seems like MT Guns was big with BAT actions and offered some stock selections. Might try talking to Lester Bruno and the other guys mentioned on the site newsletter before you decide.

I have owned 4 McMillan stocks since 1998.
Only one of these, an Edge stock, was not problematic.
Two of the other three were replaced due to manufacturing process defects which manifested years after the stock was received. Each of the replacement stocks they sent me had a botched barrel inlet. Needless to say, very non-plussed with their products. If you choose them, hope your results are better.

You might get lucky on your project if you send them your barreled action.
Don't know how many months a new stock purchase with custom inlet is taking these days, but in recent past it ran 5 or 6 months.
