McMillan rem 700 flat top/ tl3 incompatible

Can someone smarter than me explain this.

I ordered a TL3 LA thick tang single shot

I got a McMillan A5 flat top apparently it’s for a rem 700

At first Lynn and McMillan said send it and they will inlet the stock

And then she called called me and told me it won’t work because I have a bench rest style tang because I told her the action .250 tang thickness

I thought a Bench rest style tang means it square?


Ray at zermatt said it would work

She said it wont


She didn’t really explain why.

Most BR tang actions are wider tangs than the 700 foot print action tangs. That makes the width of the tang portion of the stock important to the fit. If you inlet a BR width tang into a 700 width stock, it's going to end up not having adequate support on the sides of the tang...plus looking like crap.

If the only difference is the thickness of the tang....and it's a 700 style tang....it seems like a 700 inlet should work.

The terminology seems to be the stumbling block. And thickness is different than width...but it's surprising how many interchange those terms.

A pic of the action tang sent to McMillan would likely clear everything up.
