McMillan Action?

Can anyone tell me about the benchrest actions McMillan used to make? I have an opportunity to buy one, a single shot set in an old-school, thick ply, laminated stock wearing a surprisingly short, stainless, barrel chambered in .221 Fireball. Canjar set trigger, too. The blued action is engraved in script “McMillan” and has a two-digit serial number.

I imagine these are pretty rare as the limited info I've found on the Internet says McMillan only made actions of this type for a short time in the early years.

I’m wondering if a novice like me would be well served by this piece of history as a shooter, or if I should pass and invest my time and (limited) money on something more common.

If you will use it and the price is low enough buy it. Don't buy it thinking you can make money as a collector item is my take on stuff like that.

If you want info about this action, then I suggest you call McMillan directly: http://www.mcmfamily.com/

As to the short barrel, it's common in benchrest shooting for rifle barrels to be shorter than you might be used to seeing, esp. in comparison to a deer rifle. 18.5-21" would not be atypical.

As to McMillan and their machining capabilities, they are not to be dismissed. In fact, McMillan made the action for the vaunted Tubb 2000 (aka T2K), and continues to market a nearly-identical rifle called the 'ALIAS', using their house-made action.

If the price is right, then I think it's a gamble worth taking.

Wasn't the smallest group held by a McMillan action?
Shot by Pat McMillan in 1973 with a prototype action and stock. 5 shot group was .009" center to center verified with a 60x microscope.
Record was held until 2013 I believe? I have the article somewhere, I'll look it up again.

It was two threads if I'm not mistaken. Did not realize how old they were when I commented on them. I did do a search on McMillan.
Damn it.. I did it again... Sigh...

This forum is very different than the other forums ive been on... Sorry.
