Mcmillan A5 Rear Bag Tracking

Hello everyone

Just trying to get some information and experiences from fellow shooters who use a Mcmillan A5 with a rear bag such as a SEB or Edgewood. Im currently planning a build in 260 Rem and my local shop specializes in Mcmillan stocks so Im currently deciding what stock I want to go with.

The rifle will have a heavy varmint contour barrel (Brux or Bartlein) finished at 27-28" and will predominately be used on a range shooting a mixture of F Class and long range steel but also used for hunting wide open landscapes. I really like the A5 design but the butt hook just has me a touch worried as to how it would track in a rear bag with rabbit ears. Id look to run the rear bag between the recoil pad and butt hook on the flat section of butt stock. Has anyone used these stocks like this before and had success? Also if anyone has experience with any other Mcmillan stocks in the tactical line please feel free to share your findings.

Thanks all for any information and your time

I ran one for a few years with a Rempel bipod. There’s nothing to worry about at all, the rear flat has more than enough room for a rear bunny ear bag.

It's very high if you put the rear flat on the Edgewood bag I put the dropped portion on the bunny ears, but there is not much room to slide in recoil. For me, a shorter rear flat section would be preferable, but the McM Standard A5 is a sweetheart in recoil, so I think you'll be happy in the end.

Thanks for your replies, I was thinking of getting a SEB small foot rear bag so it wouldn't take up too much room on that flat portion of butt stock, then with my non trigger hand ill use the hook to apply some pressure into my shoulder pocket so the rifle won't really slide much in the bag all that much. Im a bigger guy 6"2 and 120kg so the rifle won't move much under recoil.
Does that sound like a good technique?

Ive had an A5 since they came out. You can run the bag on the rear section behind the hook like SWD says but its tight and some thing you need to watch closely. That is the only part of the A5 I don't like. I considered making a metal bridge to go over the gap and to the recoil pad, but never did.

FWIW, the A-5 Stock has a flat that is .900" wide at a 3 degree angle.

We do also offer the A-6 PRS that has a strait butt with no butt hook, .685" wide flat at a 9 degree angle.

Some people have made and installed a bag rider like a bar that extends forward covering the gap caused by the butt hook as well.

I saw the new A6 PRS just yesterday and really liked the design, should be easily used on a rear bag and front bipod yet wouldn't look out of place out in the field. The A6 PRS is definitely the front runner for my choice

Thanks for your time and information Max

Do you know if Protektor Bags has a rear bag that fits the A-6 PRS stock?

I would take a hard look at the A3 stock. I have an A5 and not real fond of the hook. The rest of the stock is just fine. Seems to me an A3 might track better on the bags. Just a thought.:D:D

I have a BELL AND CARLSON A5 and I'm thinking of ordering some 3/4 in. Delrin roundstock on ebay as it's only $10 and have it installed on the flat as my Cheek weld is right there. I will need to have it. Drilled by a machinist as I am incapable of being square.

I had a Seb Bigfoot made for my A5 and it works great. I just measured the width of the flat piece of my stock and added 1/16th of an inch. The bag was made with this spacing between the ears and the gun tracks great.

I too have that 3/4 in Delrin and I too need to have it drilled. I think that's a great solution. I have a wool sock that I put sealed bag of 15 bean mix from Wal Mart plus I made an aluminum rear rest with 1/4×20 furniture adjusters for height and level. I put on a 1 inch front bag on it and it works.
