Match Rifle Powder by Shooters World

Ad and information says it is good for the 6BR. Anyone tried it in a BRA or a Dasher?

Curious as to if it would work anyhow well as it IS available. Since Reloader 15 is essentially unavailable I was wondering if anyone had any experience.

I think it’s a spherical powder, so I never did try it in dasher or br. I did load it into Quickload once and I seem to remember it hitting pressure with heavies. Might work well for light ones. I’ve had great luck out of precision with heavy bullets in br and dasher.

Read some articles about Precision. Now have not found out anything about Match Rifle. Seems they "book" it as the same burning rate as Rel. 15. I recently found a bullet and load combination for a Dasher that I like. Only having 3 3's of Rel 15 left, I really hate to fine-tune it at 600 and then get stuck.

Precision is listed as NOT suitable for the BR standard but see some have tested that in Dasher. Seems the velocities are a bit lower than Varget but usable. I have a good supply of Varget for my BRA's. Just curious about the Shooters' World powder called "Match Rifle".

Using 103-`108 gr. bullets in Dasher.

I have a couple pounds of Match Rifle and everything I've seen is it is comparable to CFE223 or 2520 or RL15. It is not terribly temp stable and is a ball powder. I have a 6br on the way, might try it in there.

Where did you read that SW Match is good for 6BR ? Any published loads? I have used Precision with success ,I have some SW Match on hand and would like to try it out. Thanks

I have not read anyone using it. On the website for the powder - DO73.6 - I saw an application box that said it was applicable to a 6 BR. Then it went on to classify it as essentially the same burning rate as N140, Rel 15, IMR 4064 and something else. Would have to dig that out but for now that information is on me.

Conflicting reports here until I saw a You Tube picture of the powder and Fast14riot's description of it being a type of ball or spherical powder. I hate that stuff as it manages to go all over my bench, bouncing out of the dispenser and getting stuck in everything. CF223 is one I use and dislike because of that.

Bit more research showed some normal sources are OUT of this but I just ordered a single 8# container from Mid-South. They had it in stock. At least I have more than my last 3#'s of Rel 15 to try. Have maybe 20#'s of Varget for the BRA's but just hunting for something different to use in my heavy Dasher.

Would be nice to read of someone who actually tried the stuff in a BR variant with heavier bullets for 600/1000 yard application.

Thanks, I have been researching these powders and always willing to learn . I really like Precision in 6 BR and Tactical in the 223 .

When you look at their chart it lists match rifle as good for 6BR and not precision. But when you actually go into their load data they have no BR load data for match rifle but they do for precision power!

I noticed that, confused me bigtime . I wish I could learn more about these powders .

Well when the powder arrives I plan on starting some testing in both Dasher and BRA. Now it will be load and chronograph testing no farther than 200 yards. I have enough other powders that I don't want to waste barrels and components to develop a load at one range unless I need to.

The down time is a good time to do some speculation and testing.

I did a little load test with aforementioned powder, it is not a ball powder.

Which grade are you referring to? 'Match Rifle' is a ball powder (Lovex DO73.6) and 'Precision' is an extruded single-based tubular type (Lovex SO62).

I've not used 73.6 for many years, so it may have changed / been improved, but I didn't care for it when I did try it. It was temperature affected and very dirty burning. It gives high MVs in many cartridges and good metering in volumetric throwers, but isn't a powder I'd ever choose for precision 6BR loads.

'Precision' / SO62 is an excellent Plain-Jane single base job. It was retailed for many years as Accurate Arms 4064 in the USA before Western Powders bought AA out and switched suppliers. That designation - 4064 - tells you all you need to know. If IMR-4064 works in your application, 'Precision' / SO62 will too.

Anybody confused by which SW grades are ball and which are single-based tubular should look at the SW burning rate chart which has the Lovex OEM grades and names in the next column.

https://shootersworldpowder.com/canister-propellants/#burn

Where Lovex designates a rifle grade as 'SO'- something, it's extruded / single-based.

Where it's 'DO' it's double-based and a spherical type except for SW 'Buffalo Rifle' / Lovex DO-60 which is small grain extruded type IIRC. Buffalo Rifle / DO-60 is a specialist number for large calibre BPCR type cartridges to provide black powder equivalent performance and/or to use in light or lead bullet rifle loads in smaller calibre bottleneck case designs.

The third column shows current Western Powders 'Accurate' grades and many Lovex powders used to be sold under those names in the US. So SW 'Match Rifle' aka Lovex DO-73.6 was Accurate Arms-2520 in pre Western Powders days. Although today's Accurate propellants are procured from different sources, their applications remain close to those of their Lovex predecessors, albeit the new versions are much cleaner burning and more consistent performers IMO.

The thing I found interesting is Lovex lists DO73.6 as an equal burn rate to N140, which is useable in the 6br.

How do you like the performance?

I won 3lbs in a facebook give away, haven't used it in anything yet. I dont use any of the equivalent powders, so I've been looking for a reason to use it. Thinking of using it in my '06 for silhouette matches though.

Let me know how it goes for you.
I've looked at SWP but have yet to purchase any for testing.

First test of Match Rifle was today in a 6 BRA. First it has to be noted the powder did not seem as dirty as Reloader 15. Actually thought it burned more like Varget, not clean but not hideous like Reloader 15.

With no loads printed that I could find, I read it was a Reloader 15 substitute so started at 30.0 grains with a 105 Berger Hybrid jumped in Lapua formed BRA brass. Over 2,800 fps and an ES of just 4 fps. The barrel I used is a 28" Krieger with a 7.5" twist.

After that I moved up in small increments noting the velocity change, impact shifts at 600 yards and got a feel for accuracy. I stopped at 31.3 gr. because that's all i had with me to try. Never saw pressure signs in my particular rifle and ended up in the 2,930 fps range with continued good ES.

My take is the powder deserves further testing in BRA. Also, hope to put some loads together and test in Dasher. If you test, start low and watch/measure for pressure. I did not notice any velocity spikes in my testing. That does not mean a larger powder charge would be fine. You need to be careful and cautious in your testing. My last three shots literally hit the same place on a steel plate at 600 yards.

Not sure I understand the comment.

"Match Rifle" is D073.6 or D073-06. It is touted as close to Rel 15 in burning characteristics but IS a BALL POWDER. First thing I did after opening the stuff was to spill some all over the bench. Typical of me and ball powder.

Here's more from Powder Valley on it.
