Match Rifle For A Kid

Well, a kid at heart. I am an old man who has always been interested in match shooting but I never had the chance to do it. Even now, there are no matches close to me though I have found a prone match about 3 hours away.

Still, I have always enjoyed accurate shooting on my own, just for my own recreation. I shoot at least a couple of times a week and these days it is almost exclusively small bore. I shoot at 25, 50 and 100 yards, 4 positions, on scoring type bullseye targets.

Of course, it is only fun if I do well, at least with one position on any given day, so I focus and try to take each shot carefully, because that is what I find to be fun.

Point of all this rambling is I have decided to treat myself and finally buy a position match rifle. Not for matches, though I would like that, but realistically, just for my own shooting enjoyment. I am looking at buying an Anschutz 1903, or a used 1907 if I can find one.

I am trying to keep it under $1,500, and would not mind spending less (not counting sights). Also, I do shoot Ely and Lapua on occasion but usually limit myself to Wolf and SK Standard Plus, so I am obviously not willing to spend unlimited funds on ammo.

I am looking from some wisdom here from those who may be experienced position small bore shooters.

If you were me, and a serious but strictly recreational shooter, what small bore position rifle would you buy?

I bought several smallbore rifles through the CMP over a period of years back in the early 2000s - Rem 540X, H&R M12, Win 52D, Rem 40X & XB. The 540X was a disappointment, the H&R shot well, but the stock was a club, and the 52s & 40Xs shot pretty darned good, especially considering they'd been treated rather roughly by all appearances. What I really needed though, was an accurate smallbore rifle with a prone stock at least close to the same shape & proportions of the Robertson Composites H&H stocks on my mid & LR prone rifles. I wound up trading the H&R M12 to Mac Tilton for a used Anschutz 1611 - paid him $435 boot to get the 1611, and still consider that one of - if not the best - trade I've ever made in a lifetime of trading rifles & handguns. Yes, the Anschutz had been used, and the stock had some minor dings & scratches. But someone had done a masterful job of bedding that rifle, and it was a consistent shooter with good ammo. Marvelous trigger, excellent stock (w/adjustable cheekpiece), and the price was right! Sigh - a friend convinced me to bid on an Anschutz 2011 prone rifle on Gun Broker a couple of years ago, and I wound up being the only bidder, so won a NIB 2011, with Anschutz's top of the line iron sights, for $1800. Like an idiot, I decided I couldn't afford to have two excellent Anschutz prone rifles, so sold that very fine old 1611 to another friend. I still miss that rifle...even though the 2011 shoots almost as good as the 1611 did...

It is really tough to find that perfect ammo+rifle combo. You never know what it will like until you own it and try it. It could be happy with the cheap stuff, or could only like the premium stuff. Performance also varies greatly from lot to lot with the same ammo. Be aware that Wolf and SK are made in the same factory as Lapua CenterX / Midas /Etc.

If you buy used, you might get good info on what that rifle likes and doesn't like. Might even come with the preferred variety.

I'd go with the 1903. Unless you're a truly great position shooter I don't think you'd see the difference to a 54 action.

I would stay with the Anschutz line. If buying used, just remember, once you get it, it is yours, whether the barrel has 100K+ rounds on it or not.

Just for anyone with an interest, Wolf Match Target and Match Extra are no longer made by Lapua/SK. Currently being made by Eley in England. No intent to hijack the thread. Just updating information. Shoot straight!

Make sure you check Rimfire Central,,those guys change 22 rifles over there like underwear,,,lol,,Ive had a handful of used 22s and they all shot well with right ammo,,,maybe a recrown because of someones aggressive cleaning
