Marshmallow White Prairie Dog Pups

Saw something I've never saw before in a prairie dog town, 2 bright white pups. I stayed glassing them for a few minutes just to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

Hopefully pictures coming soon if I'm able to get permission to shoot this town.

During our 2021 PD trip to Montana Winnet area we came across a family of albino white PDs. The rancher specifically requested they not be harmed. Some say they are "spirit animals". I figured the rancher owns the land and can set the rules. They really stood out in our optics though

I am in the "let them live" category.

We used to have a very small colony of white ground squirrels most folks left them alone but someone just had to shoot them and they never re-established.

Makes you wonder if these white pups really stand a chance in the wild the way they stand out. Every coyote, hawk, eagle, vulture, ferret and badger will notice these before anything else.

was driving through Kentucky a few years back, and we stopped to take a tour on an underground river. The property had a population of white tree squirrels. A unique experience all the way around.

^^ I've never heard that about the bad luck. If I do get permission to shoot this town, looks like the only thing I'll be shooting them with is a camera.

Or look at it what it is, a phenotype expression of a recessive gene(albinism). Besides the lack of melanin, there can be vision,skin problems. Maybe that's why we don't see it much in animals, they don't live long enough to be seen.

We don't discriminate.....We shot both genders, age doesn't matter and we certainly don't discriminate by color (they all turn into a red mist).

The landowner where we have hunted for 20 years wants us to thin the population as much as possible.

He is not interested in curiosities .........LOL

BTW....In 20 years of shooting this one property, I have never seen a white Prairie Dog, so it really hasn't been an issue...
