It must not represent the number of times one's pissed the forum boss off, I do believe I'd have 20 or so

The number of squares relates to the amount of posts you have. However, all Site Contributors automatically get 5 green squares and non contributors get from 1 to 5 yellow squares depending upon the number of posts under their profile.
