Mark V headspace issue

My brother bought a used Mark V from a pawn shop in .257 Weatherby Mag and wanted me to work up a load for it. I set the dies up and made a dummy round and found the bolt would not close. I then tried some ammo he had bought and shot. Even the commercial ammo was really difficult to close the bolt on. I happen to have a full set of magnum headspace gauges and found the bolt would not close on the go gauge. This rifle appears to have been shot some so I don't understand why the problem was not noticed before. My brother even shot it. I ask him about the stiff bolt closing and he said he didn't notice it. I am scratching my head here. The chamber and lugs are clean. The ejector is not stuck and appears to move freely. Any ideas about what could cause this other than a headspace issue?

Yes it will close on a piece of new brass. I have been messing with it. I think it may be an issue with the claw extractor grabbing the case because I did get it to close on the go gauge. I am used to Remington's so it be the claw extractor causing the problem.

I suspect your chamber is small and your dies are too big. You gotta see if your case needs fl sizing. Most belted magnum dies will not actually size the case

Make sure the ejector plunger goes all the way down to the bolt face.

Clean the chamber and bolt lugs.
You might have a burr in the chamber somewhere. Burr from brass, or bullet or whatever, maybe dirt.

Very unlikely it's a Headspace issue.

have you cleaned the lugs and lug area in the receiver, there could be a carbon buildup..dirty belt area, small burrs gunk.borescope would come in handy
