Mark a straight line in the woods?

What foolproof way is there to mark a really straight line though woods/brush?

I'd like to make myself a smallish range at camp. I have a nice hill to act as a backstop, and the porch as a firing point. I want to connect the two, but there is nothing but thick brush and woods in between. I'd like to clear about 900 feet long and 10 feet wide.

GPS I am a retired surveyor. { RPLS } in Texas. That is the best way. Tommy Mc

When I mark property lines , take a small engineers compass and set it on a stake, pointing at a compass bearing you want to follow. Set a flagged stake a few feet out, then one as far out as you can see, then simply start cutting forward turning around every so often to make sure the flags are still in line,

Just use a gps program on your phone and clear the path staying on a line that is +/-0.5 degree. Worked perfect for us to clear a 300 yard path for a range at our deer camp. Helps to have a bulldozer or front end loader.

I use surveyor ribbon at key visual points and a machete to cut what’s called a P line trail through the path of least resistance then progressively make it wider.

A compass and a chainsaw will work very well.

Find someone who works in the woods or has such as forester, cruiser etc. I would be happy to do it but I suspect you are not asking about Utah where we live. I worked in southern Mississippi many years ago as a forester and you might be surprised how accurately we were using a hand compass and our footsteps.

Find someone with a small grader. You are going to need that to cut down those bushes. Rent a surveyors level. You are going to have a problem with all those roots but you can take care of them later. You might want to take it in steps. Do one hundred yards and see how much trouble you run into. You may find that stretching it out to your limit is more that you really care to invest your labor in.
