marine tex or devcon

What are you guys using to bed with? I have used accu-glass gel for years but need to by more and just wondering if there is something better out there.

Both Marine tex and Devcon are great materials, it just comes down to a matter of personal preference. I prefer Marine Tex

Don't forget good old JB Weld. Having used all three I use Devcon Plastic Steel for serious action bedding simply because I believe the steel shavings in it help reinforce it and allow a long service life. You will get good results with any of them.
White Marine Tex is useful if one wants to color the bedding to match the stock.

Somewhere I read that Devcon was less likely so shrink and was harder. I think is was from one of the smiths here. I've used Marine Tex and like the consistancy but would like to try Devcon putty. Just afraid it might be too thick. I got a thread going on it too in the general gunsmith section.

Maybe one of our great smiths here will chime in on it.

While I mostly use Devcon 10110, I was looking at box of Marine Tex in the shop and contemplating using it. I noticed that it stated a 12,000 PSI tensile strength. If I recall, Devcon is less than 5000.?

I like being able to mix Devcon by weight. I guess I could figure out a ratio for Marine Tex but that is my biggest gripe- now how petty is that?!! ;D

After reading Dennis's post, curiousity killed the cat. Both JB & Marine Tex have almost identical compression strength so it really is a toss up. Both at about 4,000. There are different ratings as well & 12,000 is one of them for Marine Tex but for another factor.

Have used the Devcom Aluminum putty for years. They also make the Devcom epoxy with Stainless Steel filler.

Both of those products are excellent for pillar bedding. Check out a stock that has been bedded by either Alan Warner or Alex Stittman, it looks like they use the Devcon AL or SS epoxy's.

I would avoid the regular steel epoxy as there might be a tendency for the filler near the surface to rust. Just my thought there.

When bedding, if you use aluminum pillars, use the Devcon AL, if you use SS pillars, then use the Devcon SS. Expansion rates will be similar if you keep them matched up.

I have one rifle that was bedded with Marine Tex and can't say anything bad about it. But my shelf is stocked with Devcon products.

Well they sent me the steel putty and I've got aluminum pillers.

Should I get the al. putty or go ahead with the steel? Is the expansion rates make that big a differance?

I could use a little help here, when i use Devcon putty it is very hard ro pull the action down in and i always end up with air pockets (voids) in the bedding. Marine tex i never have that problem..jim

im hearing from guy's that the pro bed 2000 is the shiz.
i have also been looking and asking for a up comming bedding job im going to do.
i have bedded quite a few rifles with brownwlls accuglass gell with good resualts, i have used it on wood stocked hunting rifles and made poored pillers in the wood with it and they have all shot great and i used it to rebed my kimber that the stocked warped on a bit and it started shooting poorly, i rebeded how i would do it with the accuglass about two years ago and its still cuts bullet holes.my up comming bedding job is a competition rifle so i been looking for something better and was thinking about trying brownells steel bed but everyone is saying the pro bed 2000 is the best. so im going to try it.

Devcon 2 part, mix well and it's worked excellent with no voids.....I don't think I'll change to anything else.
