Marine Tex, Grey

I will be bedding a Savage Target Action and have a question about Marine Tex before I order some. They come in 2oz and 14 oz sizes. Is the 2 oz. size big enough for a single bedding job or should I get two 2 oz. or the 14 oz.

Thanks

Eric

A single 2oz package is usually enough so I wouldn’t mix the second until you actually need it. I buy the 14oz package myself. It’s really strong epoxy putty and is useful to have around. I’ve patched the charge air cooler and the radiator on my tractor , made threads to hold bolts in things , patched stocks , patched a hole in the lower unit of my 25hp outboard , and plenty of other things. It’s useful stuff to have around the shop.

Does the 14oz dry out over time? I've thrown out several containers of partially used Devcon...wasted.

I shouldn't have said "rings" in reference to Marine Tex... I bed my scope rails to receivers with Marine Tex, but with the rings I like to use JB Weld as it provides better grip on the scope tube. Marine Tex cures with a smoother surface that does not give quite as good a grip on the tube.

I just bedded a scope in rings last night, but I dont have pictures of the rings with bedding in them. Dont want to remove a leveled scope to show them either. I do however have a picture of a scope set in rings as the JB weld is curing. See below.

I apply and polish Kiwi Neutral shoe polish to the scope body and external parts of rings where excess may make contact. Just like you would a receiver in a stock. Lap the rings, apply JB Weld inside the rings, set scope in rings and level it with lightly tightened screws. Brake out the next day, trim all excess from rings, clean all Kiwi off with Automotive MAF sensor cleaner, re-level scope and torque rings to 20 inch-pounds with light threadlocker on screws. Provides 100% scope tube contact with the rings and gives the best hold on the tube possible.

I'm surprised you would have enough clearance between the rings and scope tube, to be able to get a layer of epoxy to bond to them. Do you intentionally open them up larger, and then use the epoxy to close the gap?

Purpose of lapping, is precision fit. Precision fit, means there's no gap for epoxy to "fill". What are you gaining?
Not being critical, just trying to follow the logic...

Yes I lap then bed.

There are so many advantages to bedding a scope in rings. You will never get anywhere close to 100% scope tube/ring contact with lapping alone. Dont care how much money you spend on rings. Bedding rings is the only way to achieve full contact between the sufaces. High end one piece will give mich better ring contact as they have superior alignment compared to separate rings, but even one pieces dont give 100% contact. However, I will usually only bed the bottom half of rings on a good one piece mount

Metal on metal surfaces will never give the same gripping power as the JB Weld either.

Also allows for embedding a shim in the rear to fine tune any amount of desired elevation compensation with any rings.
