March Scopes

Google is your friend....

I've heard mixed reports about them.

never, ever believe any review you read in a gun rag... the people they're reviewing for are paying customers...

The March is very expensive,$2100). It has been adopted by many of the top Benchrest shooters because the optics are exceptionally good, and it is reputed to have the most reliable tracking you can get, short of "freezing" your scope's internal adjustments and using some kind of adjustable rings or adjustable ring base.

For a short-range benchrester, will it outperform a $380 Weaver that has been "frozen"? Probably not, but many of these guys prefer nothing but the best. Friend Joe Freidrich recently ordered a March Scope, and then compared it with his Nightforce BR model. He then proceeded to shoot more perfect practice 2500s,ARA rimfire) in one week than he had in the previous 3 months. He now has three March scopes. He thinks they are worth it. For most of us a 36X Weaver or Sightron are plenty good enough.

From the initial reports it would seem that that the March,by Koto) scope was designed for the bench rest target shooters. Particular emphasis was placed on secure and precise adjustments of POA. The use of ED glass also suggests an emphasis on image quality.

However, I am puzzled why they chose the side focus system for parallax adjustment. This requires another set of elements in a moving cell with all the optical aberration corrections needed and the extra losses associated with the added surfaces. Mechanically this also flies in the face of the goal of POA stability since the need to move this cell requires clearances but must maintain perfect alignment over temperature changes and the shock and vibration associated with transport, handling and shooting. I would think that the objective cell focus/parallax with a lock ring, like US optics or even Weaver T36) would be adequate for target shooters and provide better optical performance.

Customers probably demanded side focus.
I know that I would..
I need to be able to eliminate parallax while in exact shooting position. I couldn't do that with the objective rings.

Hopefully they'll offer a 1kyd version with features useful for more than just target shooting. Thats what I'm waiting for.

Side focus is great for you right handed guys, but for us lefties it's not of much help.

I agree the side focus just adds another set of elements to slightly degrade image quality. I have two 12-42 Nightforces one a BR the other an NXS. The BR has the sharper image if you compare them side by side.
