March 5-50 SFP VS 5-40 FFP?

Hello

Pretty certain I've narrowed my next scope down to these 2. Still going to keep looking on the used market a bit too, so have some time. Was also thinking about the 7-35 ATAR too. But what keeps me coming back to the March is weight.

So. Pros in my mind on the SFP 5-50 is it's something I'm familiar with, all my other scopes are SFP. I like the 5 at the low, comes in at 30 ounces and has a 34mm tube, length is 15.7". Basically the only thing I really do not like it the turrets and the 10 MOA per revolution, and the height too.

5-40 FFP, a little shorter, 15.2", same 34mm tube, and either 20 or 24 MOA per revolution. Very nice low profile turrets.

Both have zero stops, so maybe not a big deal on the revolution thing. My use for the scope is largely long range steel, some F Class matches, and a hunting scope.

Just wondering if anyone has had a chance to handle them both, on reticles, for the 5-50 looking at the MTR-1, for the 5-40, the thinner version of the FFP reticle.

Open to thoughts on other scopes too,,,but really don't see many that compete with the march, for power and weight.

Although my reply is biased, I have both scopes and actually shot the 5-40 FFP this past weekend on a tactical gun. I am an F-class shooter and I much prefer the 5-50 SFP over the FFP. Plus you have more choices of reticles. The reticle on the FFP gets larger as you turn up the magnification.

The photos on the March Site show the reticle pretty well at different magnifications,,looks okay. I also forgot, this would be good or bad for folks depending on use, but the 5-50 is also 1/8 MOA adjustments.

Shiraz, sure you would be the best to answer. But in the photos of the 5-50, the turrets are still show just the 4 hash marks between the numbers. So is there a detent between those hash marks as well?

My March has tactical turrets that only indicate 1/4moa increments but it is an 1/8moa turret. You get used to it quickly. It is easy to see where your adjustment is at.

The March scopes have 40 less moa in elevation than the 7-35 ATACR . That will be a problem For longrange shooting. Jeff

Utter nonsense to say that March scopes would be a problem for long range shooting!

I have been using March scopes for over 10 years and have shot them in three F- Class World Championships (shot at 700, 800 and 900 Meters). I have won numerous long range matches and several National Championships at 800, 900 and 1000 yards with March scopes.

I was talking about long range. Not just 1000Yards. If they would build one I would buy it. They dont have near enough elevation on there scopes. You need at least 100moa. March has only 60moa. Jeff

The March-X 5-50X56 and 8-80X56 are rather unique in the industry right now with their 10X zoom range.

The reason for the 34mm tube but still with "only" 60MOA of adjustment is because of the thickness of the main tube; the material is an additional 2mm thick, making for a very solid scope.

I've had a March-X 5-50X56 with the illuminated MTR-2 reticle on top of my F-TR Match rifle for several years now and I am very pleased with it. I will not make any superlative claims about it, but you would have a difficult time getting me to even consider something else. A very difficult time.

An Era-Tac adjustable inclination mount would solve that problem with up to 70moa built into it.

Fully aware of the travel. Depending on caliber, with a 20 moa base might only get out to 1500 or so. I'd have to zero and mount it up before I was positive. I don't do a ton of ELR, and have different scopes with additional travel.

NF in the not to recent past had the same issues. Before the Atacr. the 8-32 NXS only had 65MOA. You needed to go to the 22 to get 100MOA.

The march 2.5-25 gets you to 100MOA. Agree that with the 34mm tube on the 5-40 / 5-50 you would expect a little more, but as it stands, this scope would handle 95% of my shooting.

My NXS 5.5-22 has been my go to scope for hunting for years. the 5-40 or the 5-50 basically comes in at the same size and weight. But, I see the March 2.5-25 taking the place of the NXS 5.5-22. At least when rifle weight is a concern.

Obsoletely love my 5-25 Atacr....but at 39 ounces, with my rifle platforms, takes me out of my comfort zone of a sub 10 pound rifle. At the range, or where rifle weight is less of a concern, the Atacr is currently my favorite. I like a heavier rifle, 9.5-10 is perfect, but when almost 100% of your hunting is done with a backpack and human power,,,you become an ounce counter LOL
