March 40x60 vs 48HM

Was wondering if anybody has had both of these scopes and what their opinion is? I’m shooting short range BR 100-200 and have been looking at the 40x60 and was wondering if it’s noticeably better than the 48. Not much weight difference so that shouldn’t be an issue. Just was wondering if somebody has had both and done a fair comparison thank you in advance.

I have both, well, my 50x is the older version of the 48x. If you have the extra room for 3ozs on the gun, the 40-60 is well worth it imho. The increase in magnification is ok and much more noticeable at 200yds and 300 as well. When the mirage gets horrible I have been able to turn it back to 40x and have a much clearer target than the muddy target image floating all over the place. I run the mirage discs in both all of the time. Right now, both are in Japan getting the LR reticle installed.

The March 48X52 HM is quite an improvement over the earlier 50X, because of the use of Super-ED glass in the 48X52.

I don’t shoot benchrest but I would probably get the 40-60 EPZ just for the extra flexibility. Please be aware that the eyepiece will grow in length as you decrease the magnification. Or shrink as you increase the mag, if you prefer that.

I have had both the earlier EPZ and the fixed 50, pre HM. Both are fine scopes for knocking holes in paper. The EPZ ( eye piece zoom ) power adjustment happens by twisting the eyepiece. Going from 40-60, there is a considerable amount of movement, in and out. This may be enough to be an issue for you. It didn't bother me much, but there was a bit of getting used to it. When I decided to shoot BR with my shoulder lightly pinning the gun as my "norm", I sold the EPZ. I suggest getting your hands on one for a look before spending the coin.

Regards
Rick

Thank you that’s great info, I have looked through the 48HM definitely like that scope just wanted some real experience, on the EPZ thank you

I have both. I use the 48x for my rimfire bench rest guns and the 40-60s for my SR CF guns. I like the idea of bringing the magnification back on the CF guns if mirage acts up, and 60X at 2 hundred when conditions permit. I started with March scopes when diving into rimfire benchrest (fixed HM 48's). When I got sucked into CF short range benchrest, I took the opportunity to try the 40-60. So far the 40-60 has lived at 60X. Summer will determine if there is any useful point in the variable. And as the eyepiece extends at 40X, it will be interesting to see how free recoil works out with my LV 6 PPC. I really hate stitches.

A fellow shooter at the most recent TackDriver match had a 40-60 that wouldn’t hold a power setting. I personally watched him turn it out to 60x and the scope slowly returned to 40x. He turned it it to about 50x and it did the same thing. Has anyone else experienced this?

Mine stays at 55X. Doesn’t move unless I want it to. Haven’t wanted it to.

My older 36-55x has never moved from where I set it. But I have only used it on a 6BR and 1860 rounds in the past 13 years.
