Making rifle stocks. (Where to learn)

. I don't know if my link will get you there or not. His stock work doesn't begin until about 10:20. Most stockmakers learned either from a mentor or had an instructor. In the video, he is working with a pre-inletted stock. If he had started from a blank, he would have inletted metal to wood first, then shaped. I know of no instructional videos for inletting and shaping a stock, either from a blank or a pre-inlet. There are a few books on the subject. I know as a fact and from experience it requires intense concentration when working by hand, such as in the video. It is not work that is quickly accomplish.

Not sure what you're hoping for. Do you want to carve your own? Or are you just wanting to see the process?

I've made several, and some of them I have posted up pictures of here:

I'm happy to walk you through my process, if that would be helpful.

The Accurate Reloading sticky is the best I know of. Les Brooks does a good job of showing how to make a stock from scratch using simple cheap tools. Of course he's been doing it for 50 years or so. The mechanics is just one thing. The art of shaping, finishing and checkering it is, to quote Monty Kennedy,; "the height of something or other".

Thanks everyone. Some of these are great resources. I will follow up with a few of you. I am curious for several reasons. But at work I have access to Cnc machines, and my boss is open to trying things. Also learning the design software. So my mind is wandering with all this.

Every machine made stock I have seen looks like it was machine made. But, machine made is a lot lower in price than hand made!

Somebody make me a bois d’ arc sprter stock
The wood for your stock is sitting in Texas. Thought I told you that? I’m thinking a spring build after I finish my wife’s tub room. Do you have a stock to duplicate or am I gonna wing it?

Step one. Find a blank.
I realize your comment may be in jest.
I have looked for bois d' arc for fore end tips and pieces are typically quite small.
I was looking for a blank of Pecan for years before a customer walked in and handed it to me. I made a nice golden stock with accents of mesquite cut from the land in Texas where I hunt.

Hope you have carbide tools to work with for that bois d'arc. I once saw a log about 18" in diameter used for a backlog for a campfire used outside Brenham at a deer lease my boss hunted. Took the landowners dad using his 4wd Ford truck to drag it up there. They said they wore out 2 chainsaw chains taking it down. Apparently there is a lot of it around the Brenham/Chappel Hill area, at least there once was.

Up in arkansas they used it for fence posts. The part that was underground turns green making a stunning color. I have made a dumptruck load of duck calls from those. It will make a drill bit smoke

I don’t think this is the “underground” part of the tree. It’s yellowish orangey brown. They had 3/4 x 6 x 36 inch pieces so I got 3 for a glue up blank.
